Fast-food burger chain inspires cult-like devotion for its steam-grilled, all-beef Slyders. – In Short
A late-night crowd orders miniature burgers by the sackful at this castle-shaped Midwestern chain restaurant. The menu is short and sweet: hamburgers, cheeseburgers and double cheeseburgers, with all-beef patties steam-grilled on a pile of onions and served on square white buns with pickles. Extras like bacon and jalapeno cheese are also available, as well as non-burger options like fried chicken or fish sandwiches and sides of fries, onion rings and cheese sticks.
I'd give it a zero if the scale had one. – I have no idea how this place got on the best burgers list. The only reason to go there is an attack of the post-bar munchies on a 21-year-old college student. You have to cover the burgers in mustard and ketchup to get them down. Like another review said, they don't even taste like burgers! Even McD's is better.
Best french fries – White Castle serves the ur-text of French fries. My dad started eating them in the '20's, and they haven't changed; nor for that matter have the "sliders." You either love WC or hate it. A physician friend (I'm a Lutheran Pastor) recently flew in from Phoenix. He was raised here and worked with me as a musician in the 60's and 70's. Upon arrival, the only place he wanted to eat was WC. He returned there again before he left.
Their fries are of true fry character, appropriately crinkle-cut; somewhat crispy but soft enough to be delicate. The extra surface area of the crinkle seems to give them extra flavor. They are flaky like the best baked potato, with great potato taste. They should be given an unhealthy coat of salt, and then enjoyed with about a half a dozen salty sliders and a WC chocolate shake.
I only allow myself to eat this sort of thing a handful of times each year. Each is memorable. And at 2:00 AM, the entertainment of the characters passing through is far beyond the Guthrie in drama and scope.
Storm the gates! – Whay can you say?...you either love them or hate them...a unique sandwich (I hesitate to call them burgers), steamed, not stirred....served in the classic box
mmmm....white castle..... – This place is a fixture amongst me and my friends whenever we are partying late night downtown. The fact that these mini burgers SLIDE right down allow the normal person to pack away 6-10 burgers in a matter of minutes. At White Castle it is all about the food and eating as many GUT BOMBS as you can.
gasy but cheap! – causes many to have gas, however the food is cheap and great tasting
Sliders – White Castle burgers are tastee, small & cheap, they deliver a great product without using a bunch of lame-o marketing gimiks
It's terrible – Mass produced mini burgers under heat lamps at a low low price.. mmm.. (or rather, ick)
what's better? – I currently live out of town where there is no White Castle. When I do return to town and friends want to take me out to lunch or dinner, I always request White Castle. What tastes better than a half a dozen White Castle double cheeseburgers? Nothing, in my book.
Sliders are the best! – If you want cheap, this place is probably the cheapest you'll find! Nothing wrong with Sliders, although some people can't stand them. No matter what time of the day, you can go to White Castles, open 24hrs. It's cheap and quick.
