Oldies but goodies are served up in heaping portions in this classic diner full of kitsch. – The Scene
Hear Little Richard, Jan and Dean and Ricky Nelson singing in the background. Vinyl booths sit atop linoleum floors. Albums line the walls. Marilyn Monroe winks from the walls. A lunch counter beckons on-the-go diners to sit on its swivel stools. The regular crowd of neighborhood folk--young and old--engage in casual chatter.

The Food
Expect tasty diner food alongside more upper-crust fare. The extensive menu includes meat loaf and mashed potatoes, Maryland crab cakes and daily blue-plate specials. Make Mom happy and order the liver and onions, or order something unexpected like the New Zealand mussels. The Hearty Southsider includes two eggs, biscuits and gravy, potatoes and Italian sausage. Jalapeno poppers satisfy post-bar munchies.

great breakfast place – My husband and I go here twice a month for breakfast/lunch on Sundays. The menu has many different options and you are taken back to a different time. Cool place and great food. The breakfast potatos rock!

Anticipation – On past 2 visits, found the service lacking. Server on first visit was amiable, server on second visit was barely average. In both instances a large group was crammed into a small setting. All orders were placed on one bill, instead of being asked (and even told) that seperate checks were needed. Portions on one order were small given cost of the meal, and portions on two other orders were cold, on the second visit. In both instances the wait for food was terrible! If you have plans to attend concert/theater, etc, expect an hour wait for food. I did like the ambience! and prices were good.

Get Real – The was a nondescript restaurant. Greasyspoon quality food. I was definitely not impressed.

Just like Mom used to make! – South City Diner = Mom's competition...The Diner has a variety of menu choices that allow the homesick to indulge in food of which Mom would approve. She would approve of the VALUE, also, as the entrees provide more than enough for the average person, at a price less than you'd expect. Try the meatloaf platter! As my stepmother used to say, "If you leave this table hungry, it's your own fault!"

South City Diner Rocks – SSD is inexpensive, clean, tasty and the ambience is great. The service is quick and pleasant and it's open 24 hours. Why go anywhere else???

Dig Daddy eats Burgers here Too! – The Big Daddy Burger here is my favorite burger in Saint Louis. Make sure you bring your appetite, it is BIG. Burgers are part of the comfort food scene, and so iis anything else you buy here. Sure the wait is sometimes obnoxious, but watch the locals, and the staff. it's part of the experience. The beef is fresh and the fixin's are great. Try an side of breakfast potatoes instead of fries for a change. If you add a malt, you certainly will be ready for anything. South City Diner is Family and all the good Homes things I liek about this town.

Bread Co. eat your heart out! – Locals love it for a reason. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is, well, South City. Who on earth would pick Bread Co. over this?!?

MARGARITAS IN THE MORNING....AHHH! – It is a rare thing to have your breakfast omlette served with a margarita in the morining, but, if your just coming off that long night shift and want to unwind at a cozy place before you draw the curtains on the daylight world this is the place to do it. quick efficent service, an eclectic staff of friendly folks, and mixed drinks at 7am when they open. The morning parking is easy and the food is a great value. recomend the Greek Omlette with feta and spinich.

Comfort Food in an Eclectic Setting – I remember when this place used to be 'Pearl and Ray's Restaurant.' All the ambiance of a street-level counter/booth restaurant is retained, with a solid menu of comfort food favorites. Best of all, you can supplement your comfort food choices with any of the more contemporary offerings if you prefer.
