My favorite restaurant on South Grand – I visit Mekong Restaurant at least once a week. Great food, friendly and reliable service, and awesome prices keep me coming back again and again.

The best pan-fried whole fish I've eaten since I summered on Mexico's Pacific coast. – Whenever I want to feel I'm in a cosmopolitan locale, Grand South Grand's own Mekong Restaurant has never failed. With their disciplined and gracious multinational staff at the helm, I have always enjoyed very good food, good service, and pleasant atmosphere. The Jade Room/smoking section at the back has an unusual foreign flavor, lit darkly and housing computers for online surfing, a bar for cocktails, it's a quiet and easy atmosphere I've often enjoyed with a glass of plum wine, a newspaper, and dinner (it is, perhaps, more casual than the beautifully lit and elegant front.). I enjoy best the summer outdoor seating, the iced coffee, and traditional egg rolls or vegetarian spring rolls, lotus root salad. Another favorite, sometimes are the roast chicken sandwiches on toasted rolls or the beef stew with egg noodles (the beef is excellent and tender, the broth invigorating). Feel free to ask your wait staff to suggest appropriate condiments for the Viet Namese foods you order. I highly recommend the whole pan fried fish; it is Beautifully served, head and tail still attached, light, crispy, golden brown -- call ahead to assure availability.

A candy store turned Vietnamese dining room. – The Scene
Like Vietnam, the restaurant is long and narrow, and there's a clear division between the old part, which is nicely decorated, and the back, which looks like it used to be a Denny's. Head toward the back of the restaurant and find the Jade Room, open 11am-3am. The menu here is strictly sushi--and Vietnamese iced coffee.

The Food
For starters, you shouldn't skip Vietnam's version of a spring roll. More subtle than its Chinese counterpart and more healthy than the Thai version, goi cuon combines delicate vermicelli with shrimp and Asian basil all wrapped in translucent rice paper and served with a deliciously tangy hoisin-and-peanut sauce. Mekong offers a wide array of entrees featuring seafood, noodles and meats, along with plenty of vegetarian options. A sure bet is pho, a Vietnamese noodle soup, which isn't too spicy for newcomers to Vietnamese cuisine but still has plenty of flavor. Another to try is ga xao xa ot: strips of lean chicken cooked with lemongrass and hot peppers.

Wouldn't go back – We are new to the area and decided to go to Mekong based on the reviews on this site. The service and ambience were fine and the price reasonable but the food was poor and the menu selection is pretty slim. The chicken with red chili sauce was spicy but otherwise flavorless - kinda like pouring hot sauce on rice. The shrimp vegetable stir fry was simply bland. While at some restaurants you keep eating even when you're full because it is so good. While at Mekong I actually stopped eating despite still being hungry. It was that bad.
