Thieves – I left a gift behind filled with baby items and just within 30 mins. The. Bag disappeared. The staff was so hospitable while we were there, but could not wait to snatch up my goodies. How friggin lame! The trick is not a treat!

Memphis Cafe in Costa Mesa – Memphis Café is a small, stylish establishment nestled in Costa Mesa near South Coast Plaza and its painfully-cool smaller sibling, The Lab. The building has a unique, angular look that seems somehow modern and retro at the same time, but its minimalist aesthetic doesn’t continue with the interior. A cozy bar and mute lighting greet diners inside, and this isn’t a big place either; there was no dull roar of conversation from table after table of patrons. That isn’t to say Memphis Café isn’t popular. There were plenty of people there, but it’s clear that this restaurant is going for a more intimate, personal atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where people lean toward each other and softly converse over drinks and good food.

Speaking of good food, let’s get to that. The food at Memphis Café surprised the hell out of me. I have to confess I was expecting semi-vegetarian, overpriced, pretentious, hipster-targeted crap. What I got was one of the best burgers I’ve had in a very long time. It had an incredible bun. It was soft, warm, crusty sourdough, but not dense or chewy at all. The patty was thick, juicy, flavorful and perfectly cooked. I’m not sure how they do their burgers, but it seems like when they mix the ground beef together they might put a little cheese or something in it to give that extra bit of juiciness. I’ve really never had another burger like it.

The fries deserve special mention. I ordered the Soul Burger and it covers about half of a large plate. It’s a big burger. The other half of that plate was covered by heaps of these hot, fresh, still-oily julienne potatoes. They feel less substantial than fries, almost like you’re eating warmed chips rather than big, starchy French fries. What that means is that you will sit there happily putting handfuls into your mouth until you eat the whole plate. They really are that good.

Memphis Café completely converted me. I went in a skeptic, and I came out bewitched by the burger and obsessed with the fries. I really will be going back there soon.

After Hours Only...... – I've eaten at Memphis, frankly it is not good

... but......

Come by on any given friday night or saturday night....... and it's totally different experience.... good "house" music.... great crowd everyone is friendly not everyone is pretty but there to have a good time.... if you drink and dance this is good spot once or twice a month... some regulars some new faces...

Zesty gumbo and appetizers deserve praise at this down-home eatery. – In Short
The small tavern is elegant despite its divey exterior. Inside, a bartender mixes up stiff drinks for regulars while couples cozy up to warm heaters on the candlelit patio. Memphis' menu is more Southern-inspired than authentic Southern, but appetizers alone go well with cocktails. Start with Zuni frybread--a down-home pizza made of cornmeal and topped with roasted poblanos peppers, corn, jack cheese and creamy pesto sauce--or crispy Southern crab cakes with smoky tomato sauce. The California influence is evident in the blue-corn chicken salad made with cornmeal-crusted chicken breast and baby greens dressed in tangy lime vinaigrette.

ok after hours but never go for food or service – i went there for brunch once and it took our waitress 15 minutes to take a drink order, then my 5oz glass of oj came out five minutes after my girlfriends. and then our meals came out separately as well. not only that but our waitress was this awful red head who made us feel as though we were wasting her time. after we ate we went to sit at the bar because we thought it might be quicker to get cocktails, our bartender was awful. she poored really weak drinks and had the nastiest attitude. i've been there for the night life scene and the music is good and there are some cool people but never ever eat there, every waitress is angry and unattractive and they can't seem to do their jobs properly.

Worst experience ever – Many mistakes were made by the kitchen. Instead of being gracious and fixing them the staff was argumentative and rude. During our meal the manager and waiters stood at the end of the bar and gave dirty looks to our table and talked about us. This is how they treat mothers in their almost empty resteraunt on Mothers Day. We wouldn't give them another try even if we were paid to do so.

Over Rated, but cool atmosphere – The atmosphere is very cool and the people there are hip to boot ... but the food ... well it was pretty good but Claim Jumper does it better! Seriously ... Have you ever had the meatloaf at Claim Jumper? Totally kix the butt of the meat loaf at memphis. Plus they let people smoke and I wasn't 100% in love with the smokey smell as I ate.

Amazing Food, Great Ambience, Worth a Shot! – Went here with my bf last night - and the food was amazing! We both decided to order several items and share - great idea! I sampled the Memphis House Salad - which was terrific, and the candied pecans really complimented the salad well!

The down home gumbo was to die for - served with white rice and large grilled shrimp, definitely an authentic treat for anybody looking to sample soul food at its finest!

My boyfriend ordered the fried catfish - which he gave a mediocre rating to. I enjoyed the hush puppies and rice that came with his meal....... :-)

Although the star of the evening was my entree - the pan roasted, french cut chicken breast with bbq'd corn, string beans and mashed potato pancakes in a lemon-thyme sauce......absolutely to die for! I honestly don't know if I could order anything else from there - the chicken may have ruined me for all the other dishes....

But I'm sure I'll manage to sample other things as well.....lol....

Anyway, the drinks were stiff which was a plus on top of everything else!

Although the service was somewhat medicore - but definitely tolerable.

I didn't get a chance to try dessert - but next time I am definitely saving room!

This restaurant is a must for anyone looking for a fun, delicious, authentic meal in a swanky, low-key, but romantic atmosphere. I recommend sitting in the patio, weather permitting....

Bon appetit!
