Chicago Style Hot Dogs - No Way! – Being from the NW side of Chicago, I've longed for the snap of a good dog (not to mention the lettuce, cucumbers and whatever else fills the bun). It's been a two-year search and after this morning's journey to Niro's Gyros - The journey will continue.
The wait was a bit long. When the plastic serving tray was placed in front of me, I knew I was not getting what I looked so hard for. The hotdog was wrapped in wax paper - nothing wrong with that. But what was wrong is that the wrapped dog was only about five to six inches long (bun included) and not more than three inches in diameter. A Chicago dog usually comes in a cardboard tray or tub, filled to overflowing, is much longer and what won't fit in the mouth, falls back into the tray as post dog consumption finger food.
The first bite left me less than luke-warm to this place. In fact, the dog was almost cold, boarderline soggy and I'm really not sure as to which of the several shades of brown best describes the meat(?). A good dog snaps when bitten, the casing is reddish, and the meat inside is pinkish flesh-toned and juicy.
As for the condiments, my dog came sans the tomato (at my request) but only had relish, mustard, sport peppers, and a few chunks of onion. What happened to the lettuce, cucumbers, slices of green peppers, dill pickle spears and the shake of celery salt?
If anyone affiliated with Portillo's, Plush Pup, Super Dawg, or any of the great dog houses in Chicago reads this - get down here, you're needed to fill the void here in K-Ville.
wow, Im looking at this and Im wondering that doesn't sound like my chicago dog, are you sure it was Niros?
Please do come by again and talk to me and fI will be sure that the chicago dog will be made just like you mentioned, chicago style. I am so sorry you had this experience; i haven't had any other complaints about it yet in the past 2 years since i opened.
