5 Barks for Alpha Dog – Dave and the Alpha Dog crew have been taking care of Sancho since we moved to Portland in March of this year. From the very beginning, it was evident that these folks care about both their customers-those with four legs and those with two!. Our dog Sancho get so excited when we turn the corner to their facility because he knows he is going to have a great time. We have boarded him there nearly a dozen times so far and they have taken exceptional care of him--making sure he gets the medicine he needs each day. I highly recommend Alpha Dog for your day care and overnight needs for your pet.

Dogs Love Alpha Dog! – Approximately two years ago I adopted an energetic and admittedly untamed puppy. I was at my wit's end with her and realized I needed help (and a break)!! I chose Alpha Dog based on its excellent location and brought Lucy in for her initial evaluation which went very well: she was happy, exhausted and fell asleep as soon she was in the car. It was a win win for both of us.

Alpha Dog has not only provided a welcome outlet for my high energy dog, the excellent and caring staff have also worked on training her and socializing her with a variety of dogs. I continue to bring Lucy to Alpha Dog for day care and have also used their boarding services.

I have recommended Alpha Dog to my friends and they have also been very pleased with the service as well as the reasonable costs of day care and boarding.

I honestly do not know what I would have done without Alpha Dog: they provide a large, fun play area for Lucy, are open long hours and are there in a pinch for day care and boarding.

Thanks Alpha Dog!!

Great place for play – My dog has been going to Alpha Dog for 8 months and loves every minute. I open the door of my car and she literally yanks me into the daycare. The staff have been great. They know how to keep things fun and safe for the dogs. I go twice a week, because if I didn't take my dog any more he'd be totally bummed out. If you want your dog to get some good play time, this place is perfect.

My dog loves Alpha Dog – Great Dog Daycare

I've been taking my dog to Alpha Dog Daycare for over a year now. We actually had been bringing him to another doggie daycare in SE but I noticed that when my dog got home he seemed to have more energy then when he left in the morning. If they were really playing with him that

shouldn't be.

My dog is a Yellow Lab, & when he was alone while I was at work he'd start getting destructive around the house. That is why we tried daycare in the first place. It wasn't until we brought him to Alpha Dog that he'd come home tired & happy, & the destoying of our furniture ceased. He can run , play ball, use tug toys etc. The staff actually gets involved to encourge play, not stop it, unless of course it needs to be stopped.

He runs like the wind from the car to Alpha Dogs door when we arrive, & Dave the owner is usually there to greet us at the curb to speed up the process. That's appreciated as I'm usually in a hurry to get to work in the morning.

Big play area, & a nice staff. Highly recommend.

Bad experience – Started bringing my dog to Alpha because it was very convenient, right on the way to work. EZ loved it and he came home tired and happy so I overlooked the smell of urine when I walked in the door. I also, unfortunately, overlooked the fact that it appeared there was only one person there at a time. In all fairness, I have no way of knowing if it's true but all signs pointed to that most of the time. More often than not when EZ was dropped off or picked up we would be greeted by the owner who would be nervously glancing at the gate and seem very concerned at what might be going on back there when he was out front.

Then came the day that I got a call from the owner. EZ had been injured and might need a stitch, he said. He claimed that EZ had been going after a ball and run over another dog who nipped him on the way by. Because of the blood EZ was separated. All fine. However, as the story unfolded, I was told that EZ was very agitated when he was kennelled and so the owner used water spray to calm him. The owner had been told at the outset that EZ had been beaten before I got him and was very frightened of hoses. He scared the dog into submission! Then, when EZ was picked up he had one vertical tear down his side that required two staples as well as 2-3 horizontal tears on his side....quite a bit more damage than would have occured from a "nip" as represented to me.

Because of his injuries EZ was kept home and after a week there was absolutely no inquiry from Alpha Dog as to EZ's condition. No apology, nothing, until they found out he wouldn't be returning to the faclity. Then, not even the courtesy of a phone call but rather an email from the owner apologizing. Too little, too late.

Only The Best – Like most dog owners we wanted only the best daycare facility for our furry best friend. So after visiting several businesses we finally settled on Alpha. Most of the facilities were decent but decent simply wasn't good enough for our active little gal. Our search also led us to many terrible facilities with disgruntled employees, high turn over and unsanitary conditions. But you won't encounter any of that at Alpha.

At Alpha, Dave the owner or Katy are always there to greet us. They know each and every dog's unique and quirky personality including their favorite toys and endearing habits. Every time I visit they are ACTIVELY ENGAGED with the dogs - either tossing a ball or chatting it up (with the dogs). Never are the dogs just left standing around like zombies staring off into space like at so many other facilities. Our high energy gal is exhausted when we pick her up and gets sooo excited when we drop her off.

The facility is also large and very clean with plenty of running room. We love that she never comes home with that awful daycare smell - a mix between cleaners and urine. When the weather permits, the large garage doors open allowing plenty of fresh air. Our little gal means the world to us and we can't thank Alpha enough for their dedication.

Tank Loves his day care – Tank has been going to Alpha Dog Day care for 2 years now, he was 6 months old when he first discovered Alpha ! My puppy, YES my 2 year old puppy, a pure bred German shepherd, is sooooo excited every morning, YES he goes 5 days a week, at exactly 1 mile before we approach Alpha, he starts barking his excitement, he knows he is moments away from being with his buddies at Alpha! We recently moved far away, but NOTHING, not even extra traffic in the morning, keeps Tank away from his beloved Alpha! Our day starts like this........7:30 am we get in car and drive 3 highways to alpha Doggy Day care, 1 mile before destination.....Tank starts barking his excitement (I think he is telling his buds he is coming) we arrive at Alpha, and DAVE the owner is waiting at door for Tank's arrival......I let Tank out of car and he runs to greet Dave and barks "let me in" which Dave does. When we arrive it is pretty quiet, but not for long, Tank is barking his greetings, which results in many dogs already lucky to be at Alpha return Tank's greeting!! With Tank's Big bushy tail wagging up a storm, he turns and smiles at me and says "thanks Mom...see ya later!). At night when I pick Tank up, Katey or Kim are waiting with Tank, he is VERY happy to see me and shows his pleasure of seeing me, but not without a kiss good bye to his girls and tells them "see ya tomorrow girls--make sure that red ball is waiting for me" and happily climbs into my car and falls asleep for the ride home !!

I LOVE ALpha-----Dave, Katey and Kim are the best ! If you want a great place for your dog, a great place to socialize your dog, a great place to wear out your dog...Look NO further---Alpha is the BEST and I will never ever leave Alpha---My Tank has GREAT taste and he loves Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday AND Friday!!!

Karin Jacobs----a TRUE fan of Dave and Alpha !!

Response to March 1, 2010 post – I am one of the owners of Alpha Dog Daycare and Boarding. We've been in business now for almost 3 years and this is the first time I feel we need to repsond to a negative post . In her post mssmith 912 of March 1, 2010 is refering to 2 differant boarding time frames. One was over the Christmas , New Years Holiday period last year from December 18th to December 28th. They did pick up their dog Chase a day early and they asked at the time for a refund. We told them that over the holiday period refunds weren't given for early pickups because as we are full at those times we could have had another dog using the space. Since it was already booked we couldn't with no advance notice easily book another dog at the last minute. I did offer a credit for a future visit which amounted to $12, which was the difference between a day of daycare $22, & boarding during the holidays $34. Chase then stays with us from February 26th to March 1. The amount on the bill didn't include the credit from the past stay. One of our staff wasn't sure what to make of it at pickup time and called me at home and had me talk with the owner. Not having the files with me at home, and not remembering the situation, I told Chases owner that we didn't offer refunds during the holiday periods. He paid the bill. Not happy mssmith immediately made her post that night.( I didn't realize the post was made till today) I did e-mail her the next morning that I had gone over the files & had made a mistake, & was sending her a check for the $12, which I then did.

I'll respond to the issue of Chases ear hot spot issues. We were informed about Chase' propensity for ear problems and gave him his medicine according to his owners' directions diligently. He is a great dog who loves to play with balls, people, & yes water. When we'd fill the water dishes he'd immediately come over and put his face in the hose. The next time he was here when we were shown the pictures of his ear infections( not a pretty sight) we were careful to not let him get near the hose. In regards to his leg injury the last time here ,as I said he LOVES to play hard. Chase was jumping for a bouncing ball and at the hieght of his jump, he pulled a muscle. Very painfull for him. We gave him lots of massage and rest, and it got better, but not completely by the time he left. Occasionally if dogs are playing an injury can happen. Not often as we supervise play, All I can say to Chases owners is I am sorry for the confusion on my part about the credit; however, given that Chase has been staying with us for such a long time we must have been doing something right for you to return to us?!

Wherever Chase goes to stay in the future will be getting a GREAT dog and we're sorry to be losing him. Again we are sorry messing up.

We will not be coming back. – UPDATE (3/3/10): I will add one more star since I did end up getting the credit today in the mail.

----

Today was the straw that broke the camel's back between myself & Alpha Dog. We have been taking our golden retriever to Alpha Dog for almost two years. We loved the fact that it was so conveniently located and that our dog would be out playing with other dogs all day. But we will no longer be taking our dog here.

Three of the last five times we have kenneled our dog at Alpha Dog he has come back injured or sick. Two times he ended up with severe hot spots under his ears because they let him play in the hose and did not dry off his ears (this is a common problem with goldens that any good kennel should know). These two hot spot incidents cost us two trips to the vet and over $300 to fix. The second time we took him the vet told us he had never seen hot spots that bad. We even took photos into Alpha Dog to show them exactly what not properly caring for our dog had done. (And I am really tempted to post these horrible photos here but will refrain.) Then, the last time we had him there (the time we were promised the credit) he comes back limping badly due to a pulled hind leg muscle.

Here's what happened today...we picked our dog up from boarding over the weekend. Over the holidays we had boarded him there for 10 days, costing us over $350 in kenneling fees. When I spoke with Dave, the owner, I told him I was unsure as to when we would be picking Chase up - the morning or evening of the 27th because the airline kept switching our flight times. He told us no big deal, since it was just a day of daycare and not an overnight issue. So we ended up paying for the full day of daycare for the 27th because we paid up front. Stupid on our part, I admit. So when we picked him up the morning of the 27th, we were promised a credit for that day of daycare towards our next stay and they would make note if this. Did we get the credit when we picked Chase up today? No. The nice girl Katie at the desk called Dave, the owner, at home and he got on the phone and spoke to my husband. He basically had no recollection of the conversation (nor had he written it down as promised) and said he couldn't honor the credit because it was over the holidays and he could have booked another dog. (1) We weren't talking about an extra night of boarding - just a day of daycare, (2) We had our dog booked there for a total of 9 nights and 8 days and (3) it was the 27th which was not a holiday or charged at the holiday rate. Wow. This decision over not crediting us $20 just cost them thousands of dollars in future business from us (as we kennel our dog a minimum of three weeks a year).
