I loved this salon! Its a little hard to find but worth it. Lindsey did an amazing color, sooo happy & loved the hand treatment!
Do not come here for color – I recently moved back to KC after living in New York for a while. I had been coloring my hair at an Aveda salon there and so looked for an Aveda in the KC area so that I could maintain my color. I was impressed by Ihloff Salon's slick website, so gave them a call and made an appointment with one of their mid-level stylists - what they call the "designer" level.
Firstly, the lighting in the salon is abysmal - I don't know how the stylists can work in there. There's very little natural light, and the artificial lighting comes from large hanging light pads, making it very dim inside. It may look sleek, but it's completely impractical.
As for the color - all I needed was to have my roots colored to match my blonde color - no highlights, pretty simple. Except it wasn't. My stylist glanced at my hair, then at her swatches, and went promptly to mixing the color. She didn't ask what my previous Aveda colorist had used. I should have been more vocal, although I did tell her my hair had a lot of red tones in it, but I assumed her speed equaled experience. It didn't. She mismatched my hair very badly - instead of blending in, my regrowth was darker and reddish. Of course, the lighting in the salon was so bad I couldn't tell until I got home. I had left with wet hair, because the salon charges substantially more for a blowdry after coloring - they call it a la carte pricing.
Well, when my roots grew out again, I called Ihloff for another appointment, this time with a more experienced stylist, one at the "senior designer" level. I learned from my mistake and also requested a blowdry. When I met with the colorist, I told her what had happened before, and warned her that my hair had a lot of red in it. I also asked if there was anything that could be done about the band of mismatched color from the previous coloring. She said yes, yes, we can do something about that. So I settled down. As she was blowdrying my hair, I noticed that something looked wrong. My hair looked even redder than last time - it was practically coppery. I brought it up, and she explained that the lighting was just exaggerating the red tones. She finished my hair and I left. I checked in the car, checked at home and received confirmation from my husband - yes, my regrowth was definitely copper. Angry at receiving poor service a second time, I called the salon and explained. They asked me to come in the next day to have it corrected. They ended up adding three different toners to my hair to try to rid it of the red. The red finally disappeared, but the resulting blonde still didn't match the rest of my hair.
After three disappointing experiences, I will never go back to Ihloff Salon.
Great Service and Training – I love this salon. It's Aveda, so not cheap. But, they offer discount haircuts on Wednesdays. Also, they have protege's that are learning and get paid accordingly. The staff is amazing and fun. The only drawback is that the protege stylists are perfecting their craft and I sent one of my girlfriends in and it took over an hour to get just a cut. But, it was perfect. So, just allow for that time. You even get a complimentary hand massage with any service. Love IT> )
