Never again! To celebrate his birthday, my husband and I decided to order in and chose Sal's Italian Ristorante (Cutler Bay, Southland Mall. 20505 S Dixie Hgwy # 1245). We ordered $43 worth of food; antipasto for one, a large pizza, a caprese sandwich, a side of fries and a slice of chocolate cake.
We split some of the antipasto, though I had less than my husband. I do have to admit the house balsamic vinaigrette dressing was quite flavorful.
The fries tasted old, as if they had been fried first thing in the morning, left out uncovered all day, then placed in the microwave before being delivered. I was not too upset about it and put them to the side. I had a few bites of the sandwich, which looked great (and tasted all right) and my husband ate a few slices of pizza. By the end of our meal, we were too full to share the cake. My husband called the restaurant to let the manager know the fries were not what we expected, and spoke to Javier (the supposed manager). After my husband explained why he was calling, Javier was quite unapologetic. I cannot recall what the exact conversation entailed, but Javier basically explained that it was not his fault as he was not the cook (No, you're the manager. I would think food preparation and quality assurance IS part of the restaurant manager's job).
The next morning, my husband was terribly ill. He ran to the bathroom and threw up. Violently. He threw up everything he ate the night prior. He threw up bile. He dry-heaved.
The fries were the least of our problem. Later the next afternoon, he checked the rest of the antipasto we'd placed in the fridge and unfortunately through taste-testing found that the salami in the antipasto was rotten. He called corporate headquarters and was told he was not the first to complain about that location. The person he spoke to said they'd research further and get back to him. I am not sure what the end-result will be, but I can guarantee we will never order or dine at Sal's. It was a horrible way to celebrate his birthday.
Great Service – Christy was our server, she was great. Good food, kids loved it...didn't break the bank.
Great family restaurant – My family and I just happened to spot this restaurant after watching a movie at the Southland mall. We found the staff very friendly and helpful; the pizza the best around; the penne alla vodka was delicious; and the cheesecake was to die for! This place is family oriented so no problem bringing the little ones..we'll definately be coming back. One big bonus: they use fresh ingredients!!!!!! Try finding that at Papa Johns!
