A bona fide Con Artist – Don't be fooled by the accent and old world smile, Renste's specialty is that of a con artist rather than a good stylist.
Upon recommendation, we tried her salon. We arrived for an in person consultation, where Rentse evaluated my partner's hair, and coyly asked how much we had paid before (a sign of things to come, I think). After making an appointment for saturday at 11am, because "it was wide open", it wasn't until we left the salon did we realize we forgot to ask her price. So we called...
On the phone, she stated for a full weave, it'll be $150-200. Keep this in mind, because this is barely a half hour after she saw the hair in person. Also note: We were replacing an existing weave and using existing extensions, so no additional hair was required for purchase.
Saturday at 11am, Renste was nowhere to be found. At 11:30am, she casually strolls in, orders a cup of tea, bagel, etc. and allowed two other girls into the salon with her-- BOTH of which claimed to have appointments at the same time! So, three identical appointments with ONE hair stylist (and her asst.) and only TWO chairs in the salon. So, strike one, overbooking!
Sometime around 1pm, two hours after the appointment was made, my partner was finally seated in the chair. Now, the original consultation was for a full weave; however, suddenly, that wasn't an option anymore. Instead, 'tracks' were encouraged, on account "full weaves don't work with white females hair texture". Bear in mind, my partner walked into the salon WITH a full weave already in place (for the last five weeks and it seemed to be just fine). Strike two: changing the arrangement.
What followed was a long afternoon (almost five hours) on constant switching between Renste's and her assistant's chairs and the sofa (so others could get their hair done) along with Renste taking multiple food breaks. All together, four other girls including my partner were being serviced at the same time. Five people, two chairs.
In addition to the tracks, Rentse added an huge amount of hair product was used, cut my partner's real hair instead of the extensions (Rentse was told explicity at the consult that the weave was originally done so her natural hair could be given time to grow-- NOT get cut!), and the hair extensions were burned by overuse of a flat iron, because Rentse tries to curl hair this way. She does NOT own the curlers you normally see in a salon of this type. All of these things were exactly against what my partner specifically discussed with Renste! Strike three, four, and five!
At the end of all this, she had the gall to charge $300 for the process! A $100 more than originally agreed. Keep in mind, instead of a weave she did tracks (5 total) which according to her own price list is $25 a track. So how did Renste get to this new, higher figure?
She said, "we had to take out the old extensions first, etc. etc." as if all of this was a complete surprise to her! Hello! We had an in person consultation just two days prior!
Anyway, when pressed, Renste refused to discuss the issue and rather chose to insult me for being "cheap"! All in all, a huge waste of time and money.
This woman is a con artist, and a poor stylist to boot. She lacks the tools of the trade, common courtesy, and a listener's ear for someone working in the service industry. Stay far, far away from this woman if you can!
