Why haven't I tried this place before?! – Everything about Aka was enjoyable. My foodie friends & I went for lunch, as none of use had ever tried this place before. We were all impressed. First, our waiter Tony was amazing and adorable--he knew everything about the menu and then some! When I asked which salad dressing was better (creamy ginger or miso viniagrette), he suggested I mix them both. He had tried it before himself and said it was fabulous. He was right! In helping my friend choose what to order, he said his favorite roll wasn't on the menu and ordered it for her. It was called the Tony roll--named after him--as he created it from all of his favorite flavors in sushi. To die for...probably the best roll I've ever had. The stuffed mushroom appetizer was also a huge hit. The owner sent over a free dessert to our table and said that happy hour is super and encouraged us to come back. We definitely will!!

Great happy hour sushi specials – Solid sushi joint with a great happy hour. We swung through here one night and ordered a bunch of items off the happy hour menu (see photos). They have all kinds of delicious little treats that were cooked well and seasoned just right. Everything hit the spot and we were very happy with our meal. I definitely wouldn't mind coming back for more.

Great sushi in a party atmosphere – Aka is a great weekend sushi spot - with their "reverse happy hour" and sleek decor, you feel a bit like you're at a trendy nightspot, but without being pretentious. They take reservations, but with or without, you'll probably have to wait a few minutes to grab one of their just-more-than-a-handful of tables. But, there's a few seats at the bar (where there always seems to be a few people having a fantastic time), and seats by the door, where they sometimes bring you a snack while you wait.

Once seated, you can peruse their huge menu of sushi and japanese specialties. Their seaweed salad and miso soup are perfect starters, along with their warm edamame. The sushi is always fresh, their California roll melts in your mouth, but their specialty rolls are where they really shine - the Red Moon roll is perfect if you like spicy, and their baked scallop roll is sinfully delcious. However, there is something about their spicy tuna that I don't care for - it's like TOO spicy or something. A letdown for such a standard roll.

Aka is a great place for a group dinner, there are lots of birthdays there, and people linger over drinks long after the food is gone. One large group birthday dinner I recently attended lead to some creative ordering - an off-the-menu ikizukuri special (sushi that's served live!). I tried it, it was like really chewy calamari, but with the "crunch" of the live fish muscle. Probably won't be trying it again!

Oh, and the parking is pretty limited, especially on weekends. Watch out for the street parking - my friends got their spare tire stolen off their jeep.

One of the Best Sushi Places in Town – Of all the sushi restaurants in town, this is, by far, my most favorite! me and my friends have been going from the opening days and we are greeted fondley each time we are there. And sometimes if we have to wait, we even luck out enough to get to try some of the new tasty snacks the owners are trying out. Great customer service that is a little off the beaten path!

The fish is some of the freshest in town and usually melts in your mouth. For appetizers, my favorite is the firecracker shrimp - give it a try along with some of the more traditional choices. But they have all of your regular favoritesas well and none will disappoint.

However, what has really 'hooked us' is their unique creation of sushi rolls. My personal favorite is the Godzilla roll which includes a unique twist on what you can do with a Nacho - sounds weird but trust me it is really great. Some of my other recommendations are the crater, rainbow and tsunami rolls. Whatever you choose, your mouth and stomach will love you for it. And yes, they do offer other non-sushi and cooked selections as well and my friends have reported they are equally as yummy.

A nice suprise that they offer is their 'reverse happy hour' which is worth the wait - starting at 9PM. I would recommend making reservations if you are going anytime after 7 on the weekends and be sure to ask to sit in Tony's section if you want some really great service. Tony is the bomb and even has a sush rolled named after him (it is really yummy, too). The atmosphere is fun and energetic but can be pretty daunting during the prime dining hours on the weekend. Hipsters dressed to the tee are seen during the weekend evening hours but during the week, you can even show up in your workout gear and feel right at home.

With great ownership, over the top food and terrific service and waitstaff, why would you need to go anywhere else?

Excellent sushi, reasonable price – Aka isn't in the trendiest part of town but for quality sushi at a reasonable price this is the best sushi in Houston. I have been to a lot of different sushi restaurants in town and this remains my absolute favorite. The sushi chefs here REALLY know what they're doing and make excellent food with fresh ingredients (so important at a sushi place). The prices aren't bargain basement low but they are very reasonable compared to ridiculously overpriced places like Miyako or Fish. The service isn't exceptional but doesn't detract from the experience at all either.

Great ambiance! – A group of us went to AKA sushi for a birthday party. The great ambiance, reverse happy hour and food was exceptional. The drawbacks to the restaurant is that the service was slow, and they were not accomodating for vegetarians. Every drink order took about 20 minutes. I mean what's so difficult about bringing out bottled beer? Also, they wouldn' t make anything vegetarian dishes off the menu. As far as the drinks, they were pretty good. I wasn't a fan of the apple or lychee sake cocktails, but the bonzai tree sake was okay.

THE BEST SUSHI IN HOUSTON – We come to this sushi house weekly, and sometimes more if we could afford to eat out more!

From the moment you enter, service is amazing, friendly smiles, attentive staff - TOP sushi chefs who are clearly proud of their work!

We always come in in happy hour, which saves us a few extra dollars and end up at $20-25 depending on how full we want to be!

FRESH, BEAUTIFUL, PASSIONATE food! Beautiful mood inside this restaurant, with flair on their simple sushi, and Art in the most decadent.

This place deserves more reviews, so whoever reads this, please visit and enjoy what we do. its almost scary to go anywhere else now because we never get the same food or experience for great prices, and its close to home.
