Gorgeous, cerebral cocktails (like the Flip Kelly with grapefruit oil and a whole duck egg) and the cuisine to match (like the cabbage-stuffed rabbit saddle), in a sleek inner SE space that's kind of hard to find.
Stellar. Have been meaning to review the place. We made reservations for NYE and got there on time. We were welcomed at the door and were seated right away. The service was friendly and festive, also professional. I would not say fast and one drink was forgotten for a bit, but such courtesy allows you to overlook the occasional mistake.
The atmosphere was urban cool--real nice. The food was great. We especially liked the sweetbreads, the soup and the pork belly special. The gnudi was not as good, but it was fine. The drinks were good.
I would recommend this place and am in fact taking colleagues from Slovakia there tomorrow night. It's a nice example of the best of Portland
This place should be on an episode of Portlandia with its menu descriptions taking minutes upon minutes to describe. ...And that's just the drinks! Okay, so they've been published in a foodie magazine. And yes, their food seems to be of a top-notch nature. But it's expensive and I still don't feel any cooler by dining there.
Fancy-ish – The food here changes regularly and has a seasonal focus. The service is consistently spot on (or so I'm told. I've only been here once but this is my friend's 4th time.) Kinda fancy-ish drinks accompany good food. Can't go wrong with a meal here.
UPDATE 8/19/11 Say it ain't so! – I've got to alter my glowing review. We've been here twice in the last month and it seems to be a different place. The energy is very different - a little sad even. Where before I saw a unified team working as one, now everyone seems tired and over it. The food has taken a serious nose dive. What's up? I carry salt in my bag for under flavored dishes and I had to use it both times. It's like the chef took up smoking and can't taste flavors anymore. Also, where is Jill? She was our favorite server - non obtrusive, professional and efficient. I hope she is only on vacation. We will give it one more shot, but there are too many great places to spend our money. I hope this is only a lull for Beaker and Flask.
My husband and I go here at least once a month. Not once have we had a bad dish or poor service. The cocktails are always lovely and perfectly mixed, the wine list rarely disappoints and husband seems to always find a beer he loves. I'm grateful that the cocktails are not sickly sweet, rather homages to classic cocktails like the ones your Grandparents likely enjoyed. The food is always spot on and absolutely delicious. Don't miss the pretzels!
Really good food, fun atmosphere, okay service – I have been there twice and both times have enjoyed my meals and drinks. A little on the pricey side and a little slow but worth it!
The one thing I have to say is the service is not great. Defiantly, not the quickest. The first time I went there it took us over an hour to get our food and the second time about 45 mins. after we ordered. In fairness, they said they make everything from scratch, but that seemed like a long time.
Regardless of the wait the food and the drinks were good.
A wallet gouger... – I want to like this place.
The first time I went here was a year ago and the service was so bad, even with only about 6 people in the whole place, it was comical. I'd never judge a place by it's serving... That's just the terrible server's dumb ass fault in most cases. It seemed expensive but I wanted to give it another chance at a later date.
The second time I came back and the service was great, the atmosphere was good and the place was pretty full, but the drinks were so small for the $8+ price tag, it was enough to make me never ever come back. My entire table of 6 people was extremely irritated with the child sized glasses. One drink comes with an ice cube the size of a small orange in it so the amount of liquid in the glass was pathetic. The happy hour (although I can see they are trying to be unique) was full of food that wasn't remotely interesting to the normal palette . Go here and you'll leave hungry and broke and heading somewhere else near by to get a normal sized drink for a normal Portland price.
Incredible dining – So far, one of our BEST dining experiences in Portland. It had been recommended by the bartender at the Hotel Deluxe and we were not disappointed. Prices were reasonable and the food was outstanding. We're still talking about it. We had several of the more interesting dishes - lamb heart, pork tongue as well as their beef shoulder with smoked marrow butter & escargot (awesome, so tender) and fried manila clams. We had them prepare their Oyster "Rich Girl" sandwich w/o the bread - and this version of the po' boy is to die for. Never knew that pork belly & fried oysters went so well together. The 4 of us had interesting cocktails. The service, espeically from the kitchen was great. We'll be back for sure.
Hidden Gem – My husband and I visted B&F recently after reading about it in our food critic book. The skate was light and delicious and the pork cheek appetizer was mouth watering.
I went again last Saturday and was not disappointed. My gf's and I shared three entrees. The shoulder was perfectly cooked and everything went amazing.
We will be visiting this restaurant again soon...hopefully Valentine's Day!
Hit and Miss food; Great Cocktails – Restaurant of the year? The food was interesting, at least they are trying but the combinations don't always seem to makes sense: I thought I would give the chef the benefit of the doubt and try the Mussels with Sweetbreads; why not? I love them both, I couldn't see how they would compliment each other but hey I wasn't cooking... But with a bland cream sauce... not good. The grilled Romaine I loved, although it is not exactly new. I must say the Pork belly sandwich was incredible, probably the best, non Asian, pork belly I have eaten anywhere. I am guessing the Chef will hit his stride and settle down and be turning out some consistently great food, but he isn't yet. The bartenders on the other hand are dead on with the cocktails, the beer list could use some work but that seems to be a common problem with people who know and love making fine cocktails, the beer gets ignored.
The best dish was the kids pasta – Wow. How could Willamette Week have named this place Restaurant of the Year, when the best dish we had was the kids plain buttered pasta??? The space is interesting, booths nice for up to 4, but any more than that is pretty crowded. Didn't try the cocktails, but I hear they are good. The pork cheeks were disappointing White Castle slider sized portions of cheek meat that was burned on the grill, but it looks like a lot more food because of the big piece of bread underneath it and the peppers smothering it. A couple bites of octopus. Grilled salad was dripping with oil, and the rabbit legs, while good on texture, basically had no flavor. If you like deviled eggs, the smoked fish deviled eggs were good. But as I say, the kids pasta (which they only made for us because the kitchen wasn't busy) was the best dish served and I didn't find enough of the meal worthy of giving this place another try. Too bad...definitely not worth the hype.
