This underrated Middle Eastern gem serves some of the best food of its kind in the city, including rare dishes and drinks like raisin mint juice, mama ghanoog (eggplant, carrot, tamarind spread), and phyllo-encrusted savory pies such as perdaplow, stuffed with shredded chicken, rice, almonds, golden raisins, and cardamom in apricot sauce.
Exotic flavors and low prices on Middle Eastern cuisine. – A leftover pool table and long empty bar speak to this venue's sordid past--it formerly hosted a seedy Korean brothel/nightclub called Gabin--though this Middle Eastern joint's cheesy sky-meets-sea paint job looks like a new beginning. Though the wide-open spaces and hard surfaces create a noise volume that's hard to ignore, it shouldn't matter much to nearby USF students, for whom the almost laughably cheap apps ($3-4), falafel-crusted pizza, and $11 entrees (phyllo-wrapped rice-and-meat concoctions, grilled kebabs, and California-inspired dolmas wrapped in Swiss chard rather than grape leaves) seem destined. Use the change from that twenty to grab a glass of wine, or two--they're only $3 a pop--and stare off into the clouds, or try to imagine the steamy scenes from this spot's sleazy past.
