Crafty Cocktails – The drinks are awesome--as good as anything you'd get at a similar serious cocktail bar in Manhattan, but SO much cheaper! And it's only a 10min subway ride from my apartment, rather than 45min. So now I don't have to shlep all the way to the LES just to find a bartender who actually treats cocktails as a craft, rather than simply slopping a few ingredients together.
Needless to say, this combo makes me a very happy girl. :)
A Sasha Petraske cocktail den in unlikely Long Island City. – Cocktail maven Sasha Petraske brings his cocktail magic across the East River to this Long Island City drinking den, a sawdust-strewn ode to 1890s New York. To that effect, the tiled confines contain dark oak, deep booths and ornate doorknobs salvaged from city schools. Equally vintage are the vest-clad barkeeps, who hand-cut ice to create Old-Fashioneds and Sazeracs ($9), as well as Queens-themed potions listed on a room-spanning chalkboard. Though the menu changes regularly, recent concoctions include the potent Steinway (rye, curaçao, lemon, sugar, soda) and the lively Queens Park Swizzle (rum, lime, mint, sugar, bitters).
