I have been lost since my hairstylist of several years left Portland. I like higher end salons because let's face it, you get what you pay for....however, I can do without the high end snobs. So, I once again searched Google for at least an hour and came across Fancy! I read all the stylists bio's and Alicia caught my eye. Scheduling with her was a breeze and I had an appointment set within a few days.
I was looking for something different, a stylist that's not afraid to create nice, chunky color (NOT blended) as I have asked so many times before and was disappointed. I could not have chose a more talented hairstylist. Alicia is down to earth, you feel comfortable with her, and she is nothing short of an artist when it comes to color, cuts and styling. I ended up with a stylist who is actually better than any stylist I have ever had.
I asked for blond/brown chunks, with a couple streaks of red, purple and blue, and an A-line cut. As a woman in her 40's, my long graying hair just wasn't doing anything for me anymore. I needed a huge change.....and Alicia gave me such gorgeous hair that I am complimented every where I go. The colored streaks were tactfully and strategically placed and my hair is simply gorgeous. I wonder where she has been all my life! LOL......and if she ever leaves I will hunt her down! Thank you Alicia......you are so wonderful and I am grateful to have found you.......you have given me some much needed self esteem and I feel pretty again. You're wonderful. :)
I Love Jen P.! – Jen P. has been my stylist for nearly 7 years. I followed her from her first salon, to a second, to a third, and now to Fancy! because she has always made my hair look fresh, innovative, and extremely flattering. I even asked her for business cards so I could hand them out to the random women who have consistently complimented me on the cut and color.
After getting to know Jen and discovering her background as a fine art painter, I understand why she has such a mastery over haircoloring--she has worked with pigments for over 20 years!
Jen has always encouraged me to go into bold territory with my hair, and she has been right on the money! Right now, we're growing out my short cut into something longer and asymmetrical, with a vastly different color. The compliments from strangers just keep coming! I'm grateful to have a stylist that I can trust to always make me look amazing.
Thank you, Jen!
Heather is great! – I was referred to Fancy Salon by a coworker with a coupon for a free haircut. Now free is a good price, and how bad could it be? I clearly went with little expectation but that was over 6 months ago and I've been going back every 6 weeks ever since. Heather not only provides a customer centered environment she provides customer centered haircare. I feel that we have collaborated to find what works best with the hair I've been given. I always leave with a great cut and feeling like I've had coffee with a friend. I would recommend her to anyone.
Jen Did It Her Way, Not Mine – Jen colored my hair with her own agenda. Instead of the blonde I've always been (thanks to the haircoloring industry), I came out a brunette. I would never pay $125+ to approximate my natural haircolor. In all honesty, I probably didn't have a very clear idea of where Jen was leading me when she introduced her idea of making my grow-out less noticeable (I never stated that this was my objective). It was also telling that when she was done, she declared she hated tell-tale roots. So mission accomplished -- her mission, not mine. I soon after conveyed my disappointment with the results, but she never contacted me. I'll never go back.
Update: Jen did contact me -- within 48 hours of my posting this review. She wasn't apologizing or offering a remedy -- no, she was confrontational and basically called me liar, saying she had never received any communication from me. Worst of all, she called me at work, where I don't have the privacy or time to address the load of attitude she was giving me. After I forwarded her the email sent months prior, she then emailed me saying there's a problem with her getting emails at work, and I should have called her. Just be on notice, this woman is unprofessional.
I hope this reaches you and you are heard. The message sent to Jen was not received. If your email had been received, the matter would have been handled otherwise.
Without the email, Jen read the review and was baffled. She is always willing to tweak something that isn't working. All of the stylists are. Unfortunately, your voice was not heard and you felt wronged.
She wanted to make a personal phone call to you, she felt that she was misunderstood and wanted to remedy the situation. The communication spiraled down from there causing hurt and anger. For that I apologize. The entire matter boils down to miscommunications. She wanted to correct the mistake or have a conversation about it, let you know that she didn't know you were unhappy.
I want you to feel peaceful, feel like you are heard. I know that this cannot be undone but I'd like the opportunity to have you feel peaceful. What can i do?
Great Color and Highlights by Brenda – I wasn't sure if my black hair could be safely lightened after having a thermal straightening disaster at another salon. Brenda proved it could! I went from black to a warm brown with amazing honey highlights! Throughout the process, she was very careful to make sure the products wouldn't harm my hair and did a number of test strands before applying an all-over treatment. I love it and can't wait to show it off. I will be recommending Fancy! Salon to friends and family.
Best Brazilian by Joni! – The thought of having a Brazilian wax has always scared me... But after talking with Joni; the esthetician at Fancy; about the procedure and the benefits of not shaving down there and the greater sensitvity and cleanliness .. I was sold and wanted to give it a try.. The first time hurt like the dickens BUT!!! I just got cleaned up for my second try and it was nothing compared to the first time and in much less time. Joni makes you feel very comfortable, and she will help you ease into the procedure as well as she can. I never thought I'd be into this but the results are amazing. She also does my brows as well and sculpts them beautifully. Joni really knows her way around the bits!! yea for a clean plate!!
Go see Jen! – I have been going to Jen Perkins to get my hair cut for three or four years now. I originally brought in pictures of the short hair that I wanted, but now I just let her go for it, and I love my hair every single time! Lately I've been sporting a pixie and it always looks feminine and cute. My husband wants me to add that she does an awesome job on men's hair too.
This past cut I asked for something that will be good for all the interviews I was about to be going on. A couple weeks later I sat down in an interview and my interviewers talked about how much they loved my hair for a good three minutes. I was offered the job a short time later! So thanks Jen!
The salon itself is a nice space, clean and comfortable (and the online booking is great), and I would recommend a haircut from Jen to anyone.
Jen is a True Artist – I've been seeing Jen Perkins for my hair cuts and coloring for about two years now, and she continues to wow me. I'm not very gifted when it comes to styling my own hair, so Jen gives me a great cut that is pretty low maintenance (only a blow dry and a bit of product necessary), but by no means boring. I have lots and lots of fine hair with several challenging cowlicks, and she knows exactly how to tame them.
Jen's true artistry comes through with her coloring. My job allows me to be creative, but I also need to remain professional, so when I asked for purple streaks, I wasn't sure how those two worlds could fit together. Jen had a real vision, and I left with steaks that were both subtle and daring. The best part is that they grew out beautifully, changing color and prompting many compliments from people for several months. Since the initial purple, I've had fuschia and now dark red, and I've loved the originality of all of my colors and styles.
Jen is fairly new to Fancy! Salon, and I really enjoy the shop as well. Clean, comfortable, and hip, they use high-quality, environmentally responsible products. Looking forward to being a loyaly customer of both Jen and Fancy! for many cuts and colors to come.
Excellent thermal straightening and haircuts – Heather, the owner, has thermally straightened my hair for over three year now. My results have been excellent. She always listens to my wishes and concerns. After a thermal product line change didn't work well for my hair, she redid at n/c and called the company to figure out the best method for my hair type. The next time was perfect. My measure of a great stylist is someone that does a great job and adjusts/fixes to meet your needs. Heather does that!
As an added bonus, the prices at the salon are more than fair!
Worst haircut of my life – I'm devastated. I got the worst hair cut of my life from Heather. She didn't listen to anything I said and did the opposite of what we discussed. She said that we would keep my bangs long so I could sweep them to the side, what did I get? Baby-doll bangs, they are so short and I look ridiculous. I told her I wanted to keep my hair long and she said okay that she would do a long hair cut, showed me about 2 inches and said she would cut that much off keeping it straight across the back, what did she do? Cut off about 5 inches making it shoulder length and layered it. It took me 9 months to grow out my hair and now she cut it all off. She cut my hair dry, didn't wash my hair and when I left I had tons of hair clippings sticking to my face. One of my friends said, well the bangs will grow out in a couple of weeks – I didn't want a haircut that was going to look good in a couple of weeks, I have a professional job that I have to go to every day. I asked another friend if she would describe my hair as a long hair cut and the answer was no. I cried the rest of the day after leaving the salon. I know it is just hair and there are worse things but the main point is she didn't do what she said or discussed and now my hair looks terrible. I have to wear a hat in public. I called Heather an hour and a half after I left the salon to tell her how disappointed I was – do you think she called me back. No! Too bad you can't rate less than 1 star on this site.
**I would like to respond to Heather’s reply to my post below – Although her response sounds good on the surface I find it hard to believe that she is “committed to making this particular incident right in whichever way the client feels is best” since she has still not reached out to me via phone or e-mail and it has been 5 days since she gave me this disastrous hair cut. I think what she is committed to is trying to save her reputation with false sincerity.
As someone who takes her work very seriously and is committed to everyone who sits in my chair loving their hair when they leave, nothing stings more than hearing about an experience like this one. My original intent in not returning the call right away was not to be aloof or cruel, but to let things cool down emotionally before a discussion. I realize now this was not the appropriate response. In truth, I haven't much experience in dealing with dissatisfied
Regardless of how I felt about the haircut, my client's satisfaction is the only yardstick that matters and in this instance I failed. I'm committed to making this particular incident right in whichever way the client feels is best. Moving forward, I'll seize this opportunity to improve communication with all my clients, even the vast majority who leave my chair loving their hair.
But most importantly, to the one who feels she got the worst haircut of her life, I am personally and professionally, sincerely sorry.
