Martha's Vineyard-themed shop is a preppy patron's paradise – In 1998, Connecticut-born brothers Shep and Ian Murray vowed to live “the good life” and started a business selling uber-preppy ties for their Wall Street friends, and a pastel-colored brand--Vineyard Vines--was born. An expansion into apparel for men, woman and popped-collar kids makes this moderately priced (when compared to retailers like Brooks Brothers or Ralph Lauren Purple Label) a favorite for CEOs and politicians. Bright colors, loud patterns and the embroidered pink whale logo are the brand’s signature elements (emblazoned on polos, khakis and grosgrain totes), and the Boston flagship store is crafted entirely in teak and mahogany. Scattered around the store are poster-sized portraits of the Murray brothers and a massive wall collage of other photos and mementos. Customers can play the resident Nintendo Wii system while they shop--the good life, indeed.
