A tiny wine bar carved out of a former upholstery store. – Known for his tasty schnitzels and bejeweled wine lists, chef/restaurateur Kurt Gutenbrunner (of Wallsé, Blaue Gans and Cafe Sabarsky) may be a symbol of Austrian precision and modernity, but he flips the script at this rustic West Village wine bar. A narrow space with pew-like seats creates a retro setting that’s perfect for sampling selections from a whimsical wine list designed by Wallsé beverage director Leo Schneemann. There’s no kitchen, no credit card machine and no phone. The menu consists mostly of wines served in small old-fashioned glasses and nibbles under $9 (sopressata, pate, seasonal salads, etc.). Go for a quiet rendezvous with a date or try to snag the standalone table in back, which seats up to 10 people.
