highly reccomended – This is a place that offers delivery and in restaurant service, and the delivery is on par with the food in house. The guacamole is fantastic- you can see and taste the cilantro, tomato, spices, everything; easily beats out Dos Caminos version. The fare is a real departure from the cheap taco-taco,taco city, happy taco etc. restaurants; you know- the Asian owned Tex Mex fast food that overpopulates this city. That said, Cascabel does not fall into the trap of overpriced Mexican fusion places. Try the guacamole, corn on the cob side, tortilla soup, and old standby tacos. The take away for me is the quality of food- for example, the corn chips are fresh , even delivered in a rain storm they show up warm, fresh, unbroken ( and perfectly designed for dipping) if you eat in, they have snow cones ( at a reasonable $2) Give it a try, it may become a staple...
Ehhh...was just okay. – Maybe if the service was better my view on the food would have been better, but overall the food & drinks were just OK. The margaritas tasted like they use a mix and were sour. The tacos & apps were kinda bland. Worse though was the service. The host said he'd have a table for us in 10 mins, so we ordered drinks at the bar. When our table came up sooner he gave our table away while we were waiting on their bartender to make us drinks, so we waited even longer. The waiter was non-attentive and could not fathom the idea of mixing tacos. i.e can I get 1 pork , 1 chicken?? Nope all or nothing. They are tacos, how hard is it to mix the selection? The table spacing is too crowded and the large bar tables close by make it feel like people are hovering over you while you eat. Disappointing, was hoping for a new neighborhood spot.
Great food & friendly staff – I went for lunch today after reading the NY Times article about their snow cones. My crew ( 6 of us) sat at the communal table and tried everything. Gorditas where amazing, tacos yummy and all for an affordable price.
We tried most of the tacos and our favorite had to be the steak tacos. We would have liked if the food came out on separate plates but, staff was helpful in getting us share plates right away.
Oh yeah and snow cones where really great.
We'll be back soon.
Food's good, Service is not – My first experience was decent so I went back a second time. The second experience was so bad, i'm not going back. The food is good (when it got there) but the waitress forgot to give us our tortilla for the salsa as a starter, the guacamole was not as good as the first time, very bland. The food took a long time to come out (40 min), both orders were served on the same tray, we were two people eating lunch, where was I supposed to eat? I asked for lime, because they forgot to place the lime on the tray, and I was told that someone will bring it right over, they didn't. I had to ask for it three times and the guy seemed annoyed that I was asking for it. The waitress, who was nice but forgetful, tried to make it up by giving me a nasty concoction, hence didn't work. Ugh, just a disaster, I will not be going back. It's a shame too, the food is good (when you don't eat it cold after waiting 20 minutes for lime) but if they can't handle the orders, don't open during lunch.
taco tuesdays! – This is more of a casual meal place. The space is tiny and hilariously decorated but the food more than makes it worth the wait. We started with the grilled corn or what some call street corn- it was covered in cheese and aioli and super tasty. We sampled the chicken and carne asada tacos and they were delicious. They have more out there choices like tongue but we went safe with the first go round, although I hear good things! We finished with the churros and they were ok but super tiny. They have mexican beers on tap. Overall, super cool vibe and good solid mexican.
Love that a great hole in the wall has finally found its place on the upper east side.
Citysearch Editorial Review – There is probably something less weird in the city than a luchador-themed taqueria on the Upper East Side, but it can be hard to think of when Duran Duran is blasting on the stereo and women are loudly comparing their latest dates to cartoons of masked wrestlers leering from the walls. These upscale tacos from Todd Mitgang, the gent behind Crave Ceviche and Kittichai, have gained a serious following, from a smoky chorizo to a daring pescado (crispy yellowfin tuna belly paired with hearts of palm). The prices match the nabe, but there are steals to be found, such as the microbrew draft beers, which nicely break up the heat of the caliente homemade salsas.
