Tipsy Parson was one of the first ones to the New Southern Cuisine party in New York, and are still pretty much the best. The food is great and the place also has a big, nice bar. Probably my favorite restaurant in Chelsea right now.
Way overpriced - the food got me sick – Some of the food at Tipsy Parson was good- the grits and the steak were excellent but the spinach salad was terrible. The bacon in the salad was almost raw, it was fatty and I couldn't even finish eating it. I was then up sick that night and the next day with food poisoning. While some of the food might have been good, it's not worth taking the risk of getting sick, especially since it was incredibly overpriced. Even if I didn't get sick, it was not worth the money, especially with so many other restaurants in the area.
Great dinner at the bar! – Just had one of the most warming, pleasant experiences at the bar there three nights ago (didn't want to wait for a table) with awesome bartender, Beau. We ate their super healthy twist on french onion soup (totally vegetarian with faro and mushrooms, yum!) and a lamb shank that was practically falling off the bone. Everything we ate and drank was pretty great making for an unexpectedly nice evening. Will be back!
well on our way to 'regular'...in a good way! – This is quickly becoming one of our favorite places...and not just in the neighborhood. Really consistently good food, drinks and service. The pulled pork (at brunch or when they have it as a dinner special) is the best in the city! I think its both braised and smoked but I know its magical. Our visits there will only get better as their maitre d' learns our faces and we dont have to wait for a table! definitely try the frozen mint julep...whatever the flavor, they've all been great!
Tasty Southern Treats! – I had a wonderful dinner at Tipsy Parson last night! I never write these silly reviews but I felt like I needed to tell people about this place. Aside from Cookshop there isn't much to eat around 9th and 19th!
So we started out dinner with some yummy snackys- fried pickles (omg favorite), deviled eggs, and fried oysters. Then we moved into the Market Salad, the Pork Ribs, and Kale Salad. For main courses we had the Cod, Pork Chop, and Catfish. Everything was delicious and devoured. They also send up this amazing house made cornbread right after you order and it comes with hot pepper jelly that's outta this world!
Service was super attentive and friendly, I don't know why anyone would call them pretentious or rude--maybe it was a bad night? I will definitely be back to Tipsy Parson!
A Gem! – Have now enjoyed many five star brunches and dinners at Tipsy Parson. The always changing menu and drink selection never fails to satisfy. The frozen mint julep is insanely addictive. And the unique selection of spirits (favoring artisanal selections in favor of mass distributed familiar brands) always makes for new and fun discoveries.
I've found myself going out of my way so I can eat here more often. Always spectacular. One of the best neighborhood spots in NYC.
Sobering experience – Was excited about hitting up this southern comfort spot in chelsea after hearing all the buzz. Unfortunately it was a bit of a let down. Upon entering it was depressingly empty. Sat at the bar and ordered a glass of red wine that was a bit too chilled after coming in from the cold. When my party arrived, we were seated in the back room which was next to a lovely garden. Our waitress was very nice and even advised us to pass on the biscuit since our entrees came with dinner rolls. Unfortuantely her pleasantness didnt translate into a great meal. Our hush puppies and fried pickles were way too dry and overcooked and the rest of our meal was just ok- a pork shank that could have fed a small army and fish that was not at all memorable.
The apple pie for 2 was the best part. Warning- if you're looking to have a private conversation or romantic evening, you may want to flip your water glasses over, as we were refilled no short of a dozen times in an hour...perhaps their way of flushing out the taste of the entrees. Has potential- hope it can work out the kinks.
Not very welcoming – I live two blocks away and was psyched for a high end comfort food restaurant. Tipsy Parson however was anything but comfortable.
They tried to sit our table of 3 at a 2 top in hallway with the gushing promise it was low traffic. 10 seconds after sitting and realizing it was where the coat check was (bumped twice in that time) we had to ask to move.
They then forgot the non alcoholic drink for the pregnant woman for 30 minutes, forgot the utensils for the entree's until we got up and asked, and the check until the third ask.
The food was ok, but man, disrespect is not a needed factor in a night out.
Shape up or ship out Tipsy Parson.
Not Worth Going – Didn't like this highly anticipated restaurant. We were expecting comfort food and got neither comfort nor food, if by food one thinks of something edible. And why would they set up a restaurant in such an unappealing fashion-- where if you are seated against the wall, you have to move not only your table but the folks next to you to go to the rest room. And why would no one who works there help move the table? While I'm asking questions: why was the food undercooked? Why was it greasy? why did no food come for ONE HOUR AFTER ORDERING? Why were they already out of things on the menu in their first week? why was the beer warm? why didn't they know how to make a proper cocktail? Why did the cheese plate never arrive? Why did the entrees and appetizers arrive at the same time? Why did I wait 15 minuted to get a table when I had a reservation and the restaurant was empty? Tasteless food and classless service. Don't bother with this place.
