I have been a regular for a long time and I had just learned last night that Otaru now has a new owner and management. The new owner is a familiar face as she is one of our favorite waitresses! As expected the food is great and the service has gotten even better! I definitely recommend Otaru!
Been a regular for a long time! – I can understand the comments about the service, however it was due more to a language barrier than un-motivated servers. They have worked very hard at fixing the problem and I definitely see improvements. Other than that, food is wonderful! Jimmy (the owner) is the nicest guy ever and I can tell he loves his job. Me and a few girlfriends have made this our regular sushi place and he takes care of us every time. Every day its $20 all you can eat rolls and saki so I have no clue why anyone would say its "overpriced." Just remember, unfortunately happy customers don't feel the need to review as much as unhappy, hence the more negative notes. I love this place and will continue to eat there.
THE WORST Service – Want the worst service of your life side with ok sushi that's overpriced? You got it!
Fresh Sushi, Not so refreshing service – Otaru is a small quiet spot. The food was fresh and tasty. The service was horrible. I bought a Groupon online for $40 worth of food for the price of $20. The only restrictions listed when I purchased the Groupon was that I had to make a reservation in advance and mention the Groupon, which I did and I wasn't able to use the Groupon towards any specials.
Upon arriving to the restaurant the waiter immediately asked if we had the Groupon and the service we received going forward was as if we were cheap. My husband is a chef and we enjoy fine dining. Sushi is one meal he has always said is simple because it's little preparation and it's pure. We were ready to eat, use our discount and then some on top of that. Everything we looked at on the menu the waiter had to check with management to see if we could use our Groupon. We place 3 orders before we got it right. We were at a point we were willing to just pay for whatever we wanted and come back another time and use the Groupon, but I told me husband let's just use this thing and get out of here.
The waiter was trying his best to serve us, but he had management looking over his shoulder nonstop and he kept getting the red light to stop. It was an uncomfortable experience and because of that I would not recommend this place to anyone, especially my friends.
The food was fresh, tasty and up to par for my husband's sophisticated palate, but the service left a horrible taste in our mouths. Save your time and money and just go somewhere else, like Sushi Robata off Frankford and the Tollway, they know how to serve a chef like my husband and a novice like me!
Lounge: Cool Place – I have never eaten at this sushi place. However, I did hang out there after-hours a couple of weeks ago (just created my citysearch account). I have to say it was actually fun. No pressure, good music and cool people just hanging out. Definitely will return. Downside: it's a fairly small place, $10.00 cover fee for guys and not a lot of seating/lounging.
I love this place ! – I have eaten here four times already and every time I have had great service and wonderful food! I just made a city search account to write this review.
Great Sushi at a great price! – Me and my friends went here last night for my birthday, it was a really awesome time! They took really good care of us and were really understanding even though we had a big group. They immediately brought more chairs when more people showed up, and they even helped my boyfriend walk out to his car to get my cake and put the candles on for him and everything! They even gave me a free sushi roll and through out the night they gave us dishes they thought I would like just because it was my birthday! We had so much fun and bough so much sushi and sake and we were all expecting it to be expensive, but every single person was surprised when they got their check! I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to go out and have a good time and get some awesome sushi and not spend a whole lot of money.
On top of all that the decor was awesome! They had all sorts of light machines that projected cool designs on the wall and there was a really nice alcove decorated with glass tiles. The atmosphere was great and later on in the night they play some really nice dance music.
The people here are really nice and friendly and really will do anything to make sure you have a good time, so get out there and you won't be disappointed!
What an entertaining place – The live Jazz music, cheap but GREAT sushi.. the customer service.. they scream something in Japanese when you walk into the restaurant. The atmosphere is very modern and beautiful. The manager told me they will turn into a lounge in December at night.. COOOOL!! This is my new favorite Japanese joint.
