Chicken-Fried Oysters (crispy oysters, celery root slaw, Franks Red Hot Sauce- served in the shell)!
Akaushi Burger (house-ground, bacon, white cheddar).
One of the best burgers in the city and a steal at lunch on Tuesdays ($10)!
Sticky Toffee Pudding (pistachio ice cream and pistachio brittle) took a spot on GQ magazine's "Five Best Desserts" of the year!
Chef David Grossman offers modern, stylish, irreverently decadent food --think duck fat popcorn, Australian butter poached wagyu, and his famous sticky toffee pudding.
Very Good Bar Food – We have eaten here probably 10 times, always for weekday lunch, so I can't speak to dinner. But the food is consistently good, hot and house made. Favorites are the chicken fried oysters, duck fat popcorn, shrimp and grits with egg and kobe burger, depending who you ask in our group. The fish and chips are the best I've had anywhere, including its birthplaces of England and Ireland. The rueben was a little dry for my tastes, although the pastrami is house cured and delicious, and the well publicized sticky toffee pudding is good, but not the best in Houston, in my opinion. The wine and drink menu is overwhelming, page after page. There's not much help on the wine list, and the last time we were there, there was only one server for the entire dining room. So some service issues persist. But I highly recommend this place for the food. It has become a regular lunch spot for us.
Great experience! – I was invited here for lunch - my first visit to the restaurant. I loved the dark decor - great atmosphere. I passed up the appetizers, but then a friend ordered the duck fat popcorn, and I took a nibble, then another, and another - couldn't stop eating the stuff! I had the Kobe burger and great thick plank french fries - and for dessert the toffee pudding. Yum! I will be going back!
Disappointing – I ventured in for brunch this past weekend; the disappointment was with the food, atmosphere, and most especially the service and value. Of all of those the food did have some things going for it but certainly not worth more than $70 for brunch for 2 people. That did include bottomless mimosas but of all the brunch spots I patronize there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to return here.
I had the omelette – fluffy, nice to look at but not very tasty. I had hollandaise on the side and someone must have dumped an entire box of salt in it because I had pickled lips when I was done. I actually love salt and use quite a bit which is why I didn’t bother to say anything but any normal person would have said something. I also didn’t want to say anything because the waiter seemed annoyed to serve me. He grunted a lot and was just odd. The sausage and bacon were both delicious.
Overall, it simply was not a good brunch atmosphere and the service was just not good. Food only okay. So, for the price we paid I have to say I won’t go back.
Lumberjacks, Just Because It's a Tavern... – First impression: nice and dark, reminded me of winter. The bar is just as big as the dining room area and looks like a good place to socialize.
We went for lunch and saw these pie-sized chicken pot pies. Much to our dismay, they were out of chicken pot pie! We settled for the salmon and the shrimp salad entree. His salmon looked ordinary, and my shrimp salad was very small but delicious. The bread was very small too. Come to think of it, the open kitchen looked tiny. I guess I expected huge portions being in a tavern...I know their chicken pot pie is fit for Paul Bunyan.
The service was fair, and the prices were a little above average...2 lunch entrees with no drinks were $32.
Poor Service - food ehhh – Food ok, overpriced. Service = terrible.
I have had two experiences at BWT so far. The last, Friday night, will be my last visit to dine. The bar and happy hour is suitable, but the service in the dining room is seriously lacking.
Our server was not knowledgeable about the menu and absolutely refused to offer any information about specific dishes that we asked about. It was to the point that I wanted to ask for a different server. He acted like we should quickly place our order, and certainly didnt "sell" us on anything. Our food came out ok, but the server never came back for our party to order more cocktails and to "check" on us.
Also, for some reason, we asked to keep the drink/wine menu, to browse over.... and it was a big deal to the server...he rushed us to order drinks, and then wanted the menu back like it was the only one in the place. It was very odd.
For a restaurant that charges $30+ per entree - I think the server should at least be able to describe the menu and offer suggestions and not act annoyed when you ask for another few more minutes to decide. I was very unsatisfied and irritated at his lack of professionalism.
The duckfat popcorn was the only good thing about this place that night.
Fun in your mouth! – Went to Branch Water Tavern for dinner tonight - it was absolutely amazing! The drinks are to die for and very innovative - there's so many options and are perfectly made so that it's hard to pick any of them.
The appetizers are delicious - at our table we had the chicken fried oysters, the crab cakes, and the the prosciutto dish. It was excellent and paired the drinks perfectly. The mix of all of the flavors really accentuated the taste of all the drinks, and trust me, we had a variety of drinks from dry to sweet.
For entrees, we had the kobe beef, the scallops, and the red snapper - it was all wonderful. The textures are great and flavor is unbelievable.
The best part of the meal, however, was probably the cheesecake - made with creme fraiche. It was like a party of cotton candy cheesecake in your mouth that ends the entire meal so perfectly. I can't wait to go back!
The chef and the restaurant manager (mixologist) are up for culinary awards this year - and for perfect reason!
The restaurant serves brunch every Sunday- and it's all very exciting - since the Chef loves to do last minute surprises for patrons.
What did you say? – Went for dinner and sat in the very back room. with all the wood and brick, everybody's voice was bouncing off the walls. we just laughed at the fact that we could hear everyone's conversations blended together. I was definately ready to go by the time we left.
the food was average, nothing amazing. Had salmon and my date had Kobe burger.
it was packed, so the atmosphere in the bar was cool, but staff not really conversational with anyone but themselves. I like to converse with the bar staff and learn a little more about the place.
I would only go back if my friends want to go and sit in bar lounge area for a few drinks & appetizers.
Wonderful Experience – I was at Branchwater on the 26th for the first time and really enjoyed it. We had a 7:45 reservation and were seated just past that time but it was ok. We were enjoying drinks in the bar.
The chicken fried oyssters were amazing!
The duck was cooked perfectly and the portion just right.
Those who say the meal wasn't satisfying are probably used to getting portion sizes 5 times what it should be. Not every meal needs to be a mountain of food nor should it be.
IGive the place a shot - bring your friends. You won't regret it
i will be a regular – BWT is very close to my house. I decided to check it out, when my sister visited me from New York.
We had a great time. Our waiter was super helpful with the menu and drinks. there was warm bustling feel in the restaurant that we both enjoyed. love the bacon wrapped shrimp and chicken fried oysters. i had the salmon on lentils , which was perfectly cooked. we had the sticky toffee dessert.
If you want to pay a lot and stay hungry...and leave angry. – We had apettizers... ridiculously served and highly priced. Nothing was horrible, food wise, but nothing was memorable only the fact that every plate was so unsatisfiying in every possible way. Not even the bread was ok. It was my mom's birthday and we couldn't stop complaining instead of enjoying. The waiter was mean, the service was slow and not caring about our clear dissapointment.
Not coming back. You shouldn't either. There are many wonderful places out there in Houston!
