Here's what there is to say about Charles Country Pan Fried Chicken. It is far and away the best in New York, and always has been. The chef-owner stands, every day, behind an immense iron pan the size of roulette wheel, and cooks each piece until it's perfectly light gold, well-seasoned, and as light as a feather. It costs almost nothing. But there are two downsides: it's only truly great for a fifteen minute window, and the place is a long, long way from most of Manhattan. It's well worth the trip though.

Good Soul Food – I'm usually not a huge fan of soul food but their food is good. I enjoyed eating their ribs, cornbread, and macaroni & cheese.

Citysearch Editorial Review – Charles Gabriel, New York’s reigning king of fried chicken, is back after someone drove a car through his old restaurant housed in the adjacent storefront. The flagship eatery of his mini soul food empire, Charles' Country Pan Fried Chicken is not exactly easy on the eyes, but you’re here for the food, not the ambiance. Perch at one of the modest wooden tables and nosh on his famous fried chicken, which is meticulously fried in a gigantic cast-iron pan instead of a drop-in-and-forget-it deep fryer, or try the $11 all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, which boasts black-eyed peas, collard greens, okra, squash and mac 'n' cheese alongside his signature chicken.
