Lush elegant atmosphere – Both hoitier and toitier than places we usually go to, and hoitier and toitier than most of the other places in the BEST BARS OF NEW YORK book. Lots of men in gray suits. They did have free M&Ms and perfect lighting... maybe you'd call it lush.
It's like the living room in someone's very rich grandparents' house. Leather-covered books on the walls, that old clock on the mantel. Plush furniture The staff, all men, wear traditional waiter's drag. The Maître d' dresses in full Maître d. The bar is on the ground-floor of a hotel where lots of famous and politically connected people stay. That means it's as noisy as hell. Plus, There were cops everywhere, and anti-suicide bombing protectors on the street: They told us it was normal.
Inside was peaceful and friendly. You walk into the lobby, down a few stairs to the left, and there you are. The thin-crust pizza and calamari weren't bad... nothing special, but not bad. There's no beer on tap, in fact the bar is pretty small. stuffed into a corner almost as an afterthought to the essential home library feel of the place. You don't come here for the food or the drinks. You come for the atmosphere. And that's not bad. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers
Citysearch Editorial Review – It may be situated on the ground floor of a Park Avenue hotel, but this comfortable lounge isn't overrun with tourists. Instead, you’re more likely to find Upper East Side locals and midtown office workers chatting over coffee or cocktails. Cushiony arm chairs, coffee tables, couches and round dining tables are scattered throughout the space, which is lined with knickknacks like picture frames, miniature statues, fancy bookends and (appropriately) books. Attentive staffers and a menu of shareable bites--tempura artichoke hearts, thin crust pizza and fried calamari, to name a few--make it an ideal spot for those looking to unwind after work, before dinner.
