Cannot say enough good things about the Skin Center and Nellie!!! She is the absolute best - I wouldn't go to anyone but her. She has done my laser hair removal, botox and filler and all procedures have turned out wonderfully!!!

I will continue to go to Nellie repeatedly :)

A jury has awarded $400,000 to a man who said a series of botched hair restoration treatments drove him to attempt suicide.

Michael Potkul, 33, said he was left disfigured and despondent after five surgical procedures by Dr. Dominic Brandy, a Pittsburgh hair-restoration specialist.

After a five-day trial before Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Gene Strassburger, the jury concluded Wednesday that Brandy was negligent and failed to deliver the results he had promised to Pot-kul.

With other court charges, the award is likely to exceed $500,000, said Jon Perry, Potkul's attorney.

"We're very pleased," he said. "We were fortunate to have a bright judge and a bright, compassionate jury."

Potkul, of Uniontown, wore a hairpiece during the trial and was clearly uneasy about removing it to show jurors his scarred scalp.

Brandy and his attorney, Korry Greene, said they were disappointed but had not decided whether to appeal. Brandy said it was the first court judgment against him in a 16-year career that included 10,000 cases.

Brandy faces other litigation. He is a defendant in five other medical malpractice cases pending in Common Pleas Court.

Potkul testified that he became obsessed about hair loss that began when he was 27. He tried Rogaine, hair plugs and a hairpiece before turning to Brandy after seeing him on a TV talk show.

In March 1992, after five surgeries that cost more than $15,000 and left him scarred, he drove to Maryland and shot himself in the chest with a .357-caliber Magnum pistol.

He was hospitalized for three weeks and had continued psychiatric care.

Juror Alan Forester said the panel had little difficulty in concluding that Brandy was negligent.

"(Potkul) was promised something - a full head of hair - and it didn't happen," Forester said.

Forester said the jury's principal difficulty in its four hours of deliberations was arriving at a damage figure. He said the panel decided to award slightly more than the $350,000 in past and future medical expenses Potkul had claimed.

Forester said jurors believed that Potkul was partly to blame for his woes, saying he did not educate himself adequately about the procedures.

In its verdict, the jury attributed 70 percent of the negligence to Brandy and 30 percent to Potkul. But the finding did not reduce the damage award because the jury also concluded that Brandy had made - and breached - a warranty to restore Potkul's hair.

"It's not over for Mike," Perry said about Potkul during closing arguments. "It's never going to be over for that poor man. People are going to point at Mike. He's the guy who tried to kill himself because of his hair."

During my 30-yr career, I have performed 20,000 successful cosmetic procedures. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees in medicine. The best any surgeon can do is provide the best treatment plan while informing patients of the risks that can occur during surgery. The patient in this 20-yr-old case signed consent forms before every treatment to acknowledge that scarring could be a complication. Sadly, when scarring occurred, he became distraught and made a tragic attempt on his life. We believe that the sizable award stemmed not from the scar on this patient's scalp but from the jury's natural compassion for this patient, combined with the media sensation surrounding this case. The jury did not find negligence with the way our surgery was performed but believed a guarantee was made to the patient with regard to his final result. Circumstances outside of our scope of care made it difficult to represent our position and ultimately contributed to the jury's sentiment. -DR. DOMINIC BRANDY

I LOVE IT HERE!!! – I can not say how WONDERFUL Brittany and Katie are!!! Katie works at the front desk and is super sweet, helpful, SMART, and great to work with. I have been in a rush to get appointments because I am leaving town for a new job and she was an enormous help. She knew my exact schedule and kept me in mind any time there was a cancellation. She called me at least 4 times to squeeze me in and always remembered exactly what I had told her about what my skin concerns were/what questions I wanted to ask, treatments I was considering, products I had questions about etc. etc. It was like talking to a best friend. Never once did she blow off my questions and just tell me to ask the doctor during my appointment or anything like that. She really listened and I feel like she was a huge help in saving time because Katie passed along such thorough messages and would get right back to me with answers. I could have spent 3 hours in my appointment asking questions, but I was able to get the answers in advance, from the comfort of my own house, which was awesome.

Brittany is AMAZING!! She gave me 2 fraxel treatments and I will do everything possible to never to go another skin professional besides her. I will be moving out of the country for 2 years and I am going to try to plan everything so I can see her on my return visits etc. She is incredibly knowledgeable, sweet, honest, and has a lot of experience- which you will know immediately from talking to her. She will not tell you to get some treatment that is not your best option. She consults you...she does not try to sell you! For example. I only have a month left in Pittsburgh, and some services are best with several treatments, so instead of telling me to get "just one treatment now" or something like that, she gave me honest advice and told me to get it done when I am back in Pittsburgh for good and can get the follow-up treatments. She went out of her way to accommodate my schedule and explain the process from beginning to end including follow up questions I had post treatments. Her response time was immediate and I could not appreciate her help more! I highly recommend going to this office and working with Brittany and Katie. You will not be disappointed!!

THE CLUB!!! I LOVE IT!! – This is where it all started! And it started with a phone call. Ines on the other end of the phone couldn't have been more kind and patient in explaining everything to me. On my 1st visit I felt just like I belonged to a special "club" Ines is such fun to be around and Bridget who did my Botox was so gentle and professional my results were so good 2 of my friends went for Botox also! Before ya knew it I was talking Quick lift and was in the competent hands of Cheri who did my evaluation. Again I felt like we were old friends. I really love the people, the knowledge, the compassion the humor and the professionalism with which I was treated there. I would recommend the Skin Center in a heart beat.

skin center products and services – The aestetic professionals at the skin center are truly interested in your skin care and beauty goals. They are not in business to sell you products and services that you do not need or want. They are personable and I trust their professional advice implicitly. I would recommend Brittney for all skin care services and product recommentations and Bridget is a genius with the injectable products. When you leave the skin center you know you are a path to long term beauty and excellence in skin care.

Unique Skin Care – I love being greeted by Ines with her warm smile. Everyone addresses you by your first name. Their guidance is invaluable. Brittney makes my skin glow with excellent peels & laser treatments. She helps me maintain the glow with good skin products & directions on how to use them. Bridget makes my flaws disappear with Botox,Juvaderm and other fillers I need. They are very professional and personable. There is no better place to go at the end of a long work day than the Shadyside Skin Center.
