What's BRC stand for? Well, there is a big red rooster out front to greet you at BRC...Comfort food at its best. Great burgers, chicken fried steak and their Crazy Oyster Roast (spinach, oyster, cream cheese, topped with a layer of ground andouille sausage, then topped with a fried oyster and drizzled with a sweet Crystal hot sauce reduction) is like Oysters Rockefeller on steroids!
You'll be hard-pressed to find a "light" item on this comfort food menu. Perfect for late-night dining, or a casual brunch.
Fried Chicken Fortune – It's 8pm. I wanted friend chicken. The closest source is BRC and they want 18 bucks for it. That is insane. It's chicken for goodness sake. Who eats $18 fried chicken?
Not this little red fox.
Average place – Good food but terrible service. Not going back.
If you go, try the Dr Pepper Quail for something different. – Cut to the Chase:
I really wanted to like BRC a lot more... it had some highs (Dr. Pepper Glazed Quail) and it had some lows (overpriced and underwhelming).
We came here for our Tuesday Night Dinner Club and we ordered several appetizers and entrees as part of our BRC experience. The Dr. Pepper glazed Kentucky fried Quail came highly recommended and it was delicious.... the savory meat and breading with the sweet glaze reminded me of when I would swap my fried chicken with the syrup left from eating waffles at the Breakfast Klub. If that was all I ate, then it would have gotten higher stars from me... however, the group ordered a variety of dishes that garnered a range of underwhelming reviews... the grilled cheese was only okay and nowhere near as cheesy as we had hoped... the mac and cheese was okay but nothing earth shattering... the chicken fried steak sandwiches were ordered by a few in our group and they felt it was alright... there was an open-faced brisket sandwich that was okay... my Leghorn salad was a decent dish, but was it $11.50 decent? We also had the boneless short ribs on mashed potatoes, and that was decent as well...
It was a decent outing... but nothing out of this world (with the exception of the Dr Pepper Quail). I wouldn't mind coming back for a drink and maybe the quail, but overall it was a-ok - hence, 3 stars. Service was top notch and very friendly.
Umm...... Yea – So the beer selection is good but averages $8 per glass. The Mojito was however made from white wine and strawberry mix and tasted pretty terrible. They were out of 1/2 of the food and several of the beers. The service was OK also but I asked for a poached egg on my salad and the waitress asked the Chef's and they told her NO. The food was 'eh, my salad was fine but one of my friends ordered the blue crab beignets and they were completely burnt. He ate them anyway because he figured the cooks wouldn't care.
The decor is very nice but the restroom doors are see through! That's right, everyone can see you doing your business, wiping and the like! I asked why they were that way and the staff admitted customers regularly complain but the Chef's say they don't care , they like the idea of seeing ladies use the pot. I will not be returning no matter what until that is fixed because who wants to eat and drink somewhere they aren't comfortable using the bathroom or where they feel uneasy about the cooks.
Great New Restaurant! – I'm a big fan of BRC! They're right down the street from me so parkings not an issue because I can just walk there. It's always packed, but it makes for great people watching. It's lively but the decor still makes it feel cozy! Their burger is delicious!
BRC Not Quite Living Up to the Hype? – It is hard to write this but BRC is not living up to the hype that I want to believe it has the potential to be.
Let me first start with the PROS:
- red-wine sangria is tasty and refreshing for a hot summer day
- pickle jar is an ingenious idea and a nice, tasty surprise
- desserts are unique and loaded with decadence (try the snicker beignet)
- mac & cheese changes daily and is fabulous
- garlicy spinach is to die for
- the NAME - I mean you can't go wrong with that one
Now to the downside:
- the waitstaff is hit or miss and you just don't know who'll you get. Some are supurb while the rest are almost hostile you are dining there.
Overall, the food was a bit disappointing but still pretty good:
- mussels were very fishy
- brisket on brisket sandwish was lacking in flavor and very fatty but the mushrooms were MARVELOUS
- chicken fried steak sandwich had very little meat, a LOT of bread and just an average flavor
- boudin lacked the kick and spice I was anticipating
- fries had great potential but ended up a soggy disappointment
Should you give it a try? definately
Will I go back again? yes b/c there are still things to try on the menu
Will they be a great brunch destination? I hope so
So here's to hoping BRC can live up to the hype and better reflect the talent they have back in the kitchen!
and as an amendement to the above review, they have just moved up on my list. A rating is not about food satisfaction alone but in the entire dining expereince.
Here is my epilogue:
so I must amend my review and just say a few more good things about the restaurant after my initial review.
tonight we had a poor dining experience which I followed up with a brief email to the owners just expressing our lackluster waitstaff. Almost immediately, I heard back from one of the proprietors, Shepherd Ross. I must commend Mr. Ross on his desire to address the needs of his customers and continue to evolve the restaruant into a place that meets his vision while at the same time becomes a place his clientel enjoys. I feel confident that they will take all critiques to heart and continue to evolve this quaint little neighborhood restaurant into its full potential and insure that it indeed DOES LIVE UP TO THE HYPE! Kudos guys!!!!
Great Late Night Dining – I really enjoyed BRC! We sat on the patio and had an amazing waiter! I was very pleased with the menu and pricing and LOVED the selection of unique beers and cocktails! Parking is not bad and the staff was very friendly. I will definately visit again!
Citysearch Editorial Review – Appropriately installed along the Shepherd strip of chef-driven restaurants where low culture meets high, BRC entices with cheeky upscale comfort food dreamed up by Chef Jeff Axline and the Glass Wall’s Lance Fegan and Shepard Ross. The small dining room is constantly buzzing with people yearning for cheddar biscuits with sweet and smokey bacon jam or Dr. Pepper fried quail and everything, from the velvety red wallpaper to the flour sack napkins, creates a country noir vibe that is both comfortable and luxurious. Add to that a long list of American craft beer, and you’ve got yourself an instant hit.
