Citysearch Editorial Review – While many in the burgeoning San Francisco cupcake scene tend to rely heavily on traditional recipes, American Cupcake’s Devin Alper takes the Willie Wonka approach, gleefully concocting unusual flavors (Pixi Stix, Passionfruit) that are nothing like what your mother used to make. It makes sense then that the bakery’s interior, with its high gloss white surfaces bathed in rainbow hued light, looks like a My Little Pony’s science lab. While cupcakes are the name of the game, with flavors ranging from Red Velvet to Bubblegum, there is also a full menu of carnival style eats including pulled pork sliders, tater tots, and a full page of variations on peanut butter and jelly. As one of the only establishments in the area that is open till 11 p.m., American can get a little rowdy after dark thanks in part to its surprisingly adult drink list which includes everything from Delerium Tremens to cockatils like The Sunburn which mixes Passionfruit puree with Racer 5 IPA.
