I have been training here for about a little over a month. I only wish I could make class more often! The people I have met here are great and the instructors do a great job teaching Krav.
I decided to write this review because I read a few other reviews that were negative because the person writing the review disagreed with the social/ political beliefs of an instructor that I have personally never met. I am not going to go into detail because I don't feel that this person(s) addressed the training and core aspect of this gym. TO ME this gym is great because they do a great job of training you in realistic self defense and I have never once been to a class were anything even remotely political or social was discussed or brought up in the course of class/ training.
I am an honorably discharged Marine Combat Veteran and I can honestly say that I have learned more about self defense (WITHOUT EVER HAVING TO SUFFER THROUGH SOMEONE, i.e. AN INSTRUCTOR, ELSE'S POLITICAL OR SOCIAL VIEWS DURING CLASS) than I did in all four years of my Marine Corps Enlistment. I realize and agree that finding a gym where "you" feel respected and appreciated is very, very important, but in my experience all of the instructors and students here have been ABSOLUTELY PROFESSIONAL, COURTEOUS, AND KNOWLEDGEABLE! I recommend this place to ANYONE, regardless of their political, social, religious, or sexual orientation; SO LONG AS YOU CHECK YOUR OPINIONS AND EGO AT THE DOOR! Remember people are coming here to learn HOW TO FIGHT EFFECTIVELY, NOT CATER TOO YOUR WORLDVIEW! if you can't handle that shut up and don't come; otherwise I can't tell you adequately in words just how happy you will be with all aspects of this place and the people who come here to train.
WITHOUT A DOUBT EVERY CLASS I ATTEND IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY WEEK!
Great MMA studio & staff – The comments from libtards and/or LGBT advocates slandering Molotov are completely unwarranted and highlight their duplicitous conservaphobic intolerance. A shame really because, Molotov is a stand-up guy (the idiot who said he lacks intelligence obviously does not know he happens to be a MENSA member) and a great instructor as is Ken (the owner). Oh and one more thing, disapproving of LGBT lifestyle does not make one a bigot.
If you are looking for a no-fluff intense training regimen, this is a great place. Leave your political/sexual/social mores at home where they belong.
Krav Maga Raleigh – This is a fantastic school led by Ken Richstad an excellent motivator and instructor. Although I haven't been there for a time due to unrelated physical issues, I often wish i could go and join in the fun and camaraderie. I see Ken as a man with vision and drive. I have read these silly reviews about an assistant instructor who has very conservative views and is a bit of an internet celebrity and, I have to say, I wouldn't for a minute let Molotov Mitchell bother me. He is polite and his political and moral views simply have no affect on my learning. I think if someone has a problem with him they should have a conversation with him. I suppose they are too phobic which," for the record", means afraid and not hateful. People have a right to their opinions. He has instructed me and has done well. I was there to learn a fighting style and not to find like minded liberal and/or conservative political buddies. I also know one of the more advanced students there that helps Ken instruct is very liberal. There are all types there and they get along just fine So unless you're a conservophobe and you only want right-wingers to learn how to fight then get your a** down there and learn something. You'll enjoy it immensely.
Get fit Go home safe – I've been going to KMR for about 6 months and have worked out with almost every member - both men and women. Probably 30% of the members are women.
This place has a great sense of community - people do much more than just work out in the same class, they work with each other, encourage each other, push each other to do better, etc.
Ken the owner is a natural teacher who exudes the Krav Maga mentality and uses a positive teaching/coaching style to re-inforce the proper mind set and technique. He always has a smile on and can always find something positive to say about how you are doing / progressing.
I drive 30 miles each way 3 to 4 days a week to train here. In the past 6 months I've become much more physically fit than 2 years in a conventional gym and although always able to "handle" myself I'm much more confident in any situation.
If you remotely think your interested you should give it a try. I guarantee the people there will make you feel at home. As you interact with other members you can also find folks with similar interest and goals as yourself which makes it a lot of fun to progress at a similar pace.
would be great except for Molotov Mitchell – After looking for a self defense class, I found Krav Maga Raleigh, Its a really neat set up is basement in downtown Raleigh. I went and took a couple of classes, both times to my dismay, Jason "Molotov" Mitchell was the teacher. I couldn't place him at first, but he looked familiar. After racking my brain and a little time on my computer, I found out why he looked so familiar. He HATES Gays and thinks homosexuality should be a capitol offense. Before you take a class there do a Google search of Molotov Mitchell and see if you want to learn from bigot like Jason Mitchell. Sorry I wont be going back.
In many ways a great place, but... – Ken Richstad is a fantastic instructor. His personality, expertise and teaching style make for an excellent learning environment.
Unfortunately, Ken recently made a bad business decision in allowing a student, Jason "Molotov" Mitchell, to work as an instructor to take over some of his classes.
Jason uses an overconfident, authoritarian teaching style to compensate for his small intellect. His style puts people off and creates a negative learning environment.
