Cheese whisperer Steve Jones presides over one of the finest cheese counters around, but don’t buy your Roquefort and run, stay awhile and enjoy a Stinky Board, Cubano, or the decadent mac ‘n cheese with a bottle of something merry.
No list of Portland’s best cheese plates would be complete without a mention of Steve Jones’ dairy dreamland on SE Belmont. If there’s a good cheese selection anywhere in the city, there’s a good chance Jones had his hands on the wedges before they arrived at the restaurant.
Cheese Bar – Blink and you’ll miss this unpretentious storefront at the foot of Mt. Tabor. Formerly known as Steve’s Cheese, it’s a retail cheese shop, counter, deli and bar. Cheese monger Steve Jones is one of Portland’s finest and is happy to answer endless questions about his product or offer tastes for the skeptical buyer. The new shop is slick and surprisingly dark with hardwood floors, a few 4-tops and bar seating. One small glass case displays dozens of artisan cheeses, while another stocks a hefty selection of charcuterie. All of which can be ordered for take away or to enjoy at the bar with a cold pint of IPA. They also dish up daily soups, sandwiches, salads and cazuelas.
