the interior should be ripped out and re-created, but it's dimly lit enough with candles for the dinner rush, you can't even notice the lack of charm!
Have you ever fallen in love over dinner? – So, I sat down for dinner at B3 not expecting too much. Sometimes having low expectations keeps you from being disappointed. In this case, my low expectations were blown out of the water and have caused me to re-think my future dining experiences at other new places.
First, the menu was somewhat limited, but they had a nice selection of burgers. Not my favorite food. In fact, I was drawn in by the salmon listed as a special on the chalkboard outside. When I started looking at the menu, I found myself inundated with different food from anywhere else in the neighborhood and needing advice on my selection.
Next, the staff. There was a bit of a language barrier. I'm a New Yorker. I don't speak hoots and clicks. Luckily, they've got a veritable New Yorker hiding behind all the international employees, and lucky for the restaurant, he's on top of things. In fact, I could almost wax romantic about the tall hero who came to my restaurant rescue, but alas, I won't bore you with my own non-food fantasies....
When I asked for advice about the menu choices, my white night offered me his personal suggestions with a numerical ranking of favorites as well as an honest opinion about non-faves. I settled on the Chicken Fajita Soup (which was rated as the best soup on the menu by my new server). I won't give it two thumbs up because that's tacky, but I can honestly say I did want to lick the bowl. Yes, it's that good. Excellent suggestion. My hero!
When it came to food, my server professed to be a non-seafood fan, thus wouldn't and couldn't honestly recommend the salmon or the seafood burger. I respect that. Honesty is good. Really good it turns out. Instead, I was showed the virtues and unusual subtleties of the other options. I finally had to admit I wasn't as hungry as I'd been thanks to the hearty pottage, so I decided, gasp, to have a burger.
The vietnamese burger. As I was told, it is the best item on the menu. Atleast in that server's opinion. I give him props. I liked his ranking system, I enjoyed his commentery and I particularly enjoyed this recommendation. When he told me he'd finally realized why he liked this item so much, I was a bit doubtful about his reasoning (it tastes exactly like fried pork dumplings, or so he said)....you know what, this guy knows his food. Dead on. It was amazingly tender. Totally delicious. Seasoned just right and had enough texture and sass to really spark it up a notch or two beyond how it was described.
Finally, my new bff, you know, my server, offered me dessert that would make me pucker up and smile. Lemon pudding cake? Really? a cross between lemon merangue pie and key lime pie? Uh huh. I'm thinking that's not too likely, but he's been batting a thousand, so once again, I"ll take him up on his suggestion.
Out of the ballpark. Amazing. A server who knows that much about what he's talking about, cares enough about what he's selling to make sure I know what he's selling and thoughtful enough to make sure you leave wanting more? That has never happened to me before.
This place has almost everything. It's lacking some decore, but no big deal. I'm not there to look at cheesy artwork, I'm there to eat. Best meal in a long time. Anyone know if my waiter is single? More importantly is he straight? Either way, I think this might be true love. Atleast with the food if not with the waiter.
My new fave in Hells Kitchen – I popped into this place the weekend it opened to check it out and have been back twice since. The spicy corn soup (with a fistful of cilantro and chicken and shrimp!) is unique and flavorful. The Vietnamese Burger is another unique item w/ a creative mix of flavors. The chicken burger was tender with a slice of avocado and a tasty sauce. The staff was super friendly and attentive and remembered me when I returned. And the prices can't be beat. Surpasses Five Napkin Burger in quality and prices.
DMANBURGER "Blackburn Burger Bistro" – Newly opened Blackburn Burger Bistro is situated in busy Hell’s Kitchen- open bay windows with faux-plant hedges will lead you into a decor like you were stepping into a Holiday Inn Express banquet room-red and beige walls, oversized floral patterned banquettes and a gaudy stain glass chandelier. The dining room is small with minimal wait staff with minimal knowledge of the product they are serving. The menu is moderately inventive featuring starters like grilled corn on the cob, and a Crab and Shrimp melt and various soups and salads. Happy couples, mostly tourists, sipping beer in tall warm glasses and wrestling with chewy Tandorri chicken with cous cous and leaves of lettuce. The grilled shrimp salad with bacon, avocado and citrus dressing, was simple and fresh.
The burger headliner is the Blackburn signature -a classic beef pork blend with sautéed onions, a dollop of pimento mayo and a puffy lightly toasted bun. The Blackburn signature was charred black on an open flame grill, criss crossed crunchy edges and a medium well-cooked center. I was never asked how I would like it cooked and really never thought at the time to tell them. The patty was a little dry, but still with the crunchy pieces of charred burger, gave ample flavor and texture. Rich smokey sautéed onions were piled high on top and the pimento mayo added a nice smooth peppery flavor. The bun was surprisingly light and fluffy. The Vietnamese burger consisted of lean ground pork served with ham, cheese, daikon, carrot, cilantro and zesty chili garlic sauce served on the same puffy roll. The Vietnamese burger was the better of the two, a garden fresh porky flavor, with a crunch of the vegetables and the zing of the Asian chili sauce complementing it nicely. French Fries were partly skin left and sadly soggy, they also have a slider, a chicken burger with basil mayonnaise, and seafood burger with guacamole on a baguette. Blackburn’s staff were friendly if untrained and unsure, this hopefully for their sake will improve.
