Reviews for Commonwealth

Modern American cuisine that is so major. The food is thoughtful, interesting and delicious. My favorite was the popcorn ice cream and beet dish.

Fancy, thoughtful presentations are sometimes overcomplicated, but most hit the mark; wine pairings with the six-course tasting are a delight.

I love how earnest and dedicated the team is here. The progressive cuisine is sophisticated but at a very budget-friendly price point. Never miss their sea urchin dish! Interesting wines, too. Good date spot.

Frustrating (and quite expensive) experience. Attentive service nevertheless.

Worth It – Commonwealth is worth it. Worth the wait for the restaurant to open. Worth the wait for a table, should you decide to drop in. Worth the money, which is on the higher end for the Mission. And located on Mission Street and 18th, Commonwealth is in the heart of the Mission, on what surely is one of the most gourmet corridors in the city. The menu is typical fresh, seasonal California fare with a somewhat Japanese twist at times, but executive chef Jason Fox (formerly of Bar Tartine) is not your typical chef. The food is exquisite. The shishito peppers were salty and a tad spicy; the summer squash soup was light and the accompanying fried squash blossoms will make you wonder why they aren’t used more. I woke up the morning after thinking about the butter poached black cod, which was silky and popped with lemon and salt. The plates are small(ish), which most of the time I don’t really enjoy – you never get enough of any one dish – but it works here. Portions are big enough that you won’t feel slighted but small enough that you get try an assortment. The restaurant can’t seat more than 50, giving it an accessible, friendly feel. If you go with the tasting menu, $10 of your bill will be donated to a beneficiary of Commonwealth’s choosing. Good food for a good cause.
