Reviews for Hill Country Chicken

A fine, underrated chicken joint that deserves special recognition for its country sides.

Amaizing Chicken – A great new chicken place. I had the Texas tenders and a biscuit. The Tenders were sooo juicy and moist and flavorful. The crust has a great crunch and kept all those juices in. The biscuit had great texture. The place is busy but the staff kept the line going.

Not impressed – OK, should've waited for one thing; lotsa new-opening kinks. I was there at 8 pm on a Sunday night, prime dinner hour for New Yorkers. Understandable that new places have some things to iron out, but in this case, given that it's owned by the ginormous Hill Country BBQ around the corner, you'd think they would have this stuff down pat.

It's fast-food setup; you go through a cafeteria-style line to get your food.

I had planned to get a chick breast $5.50, a biscuit $1, cheesy fried mashed potatoes (sm) $2.50, and a piece of lemon meringue pie $5.

They were out of biscuits (for the night!), had to wait until they cooked some more chicken, and they were out of all the pies!

So I was dialed back and got a breast and the cheesy fried mashed potatoes. They don't have regular mashed potatoes, and I can't say that the ones I got were very good. Maybe it's just that I'm not that much of a cheese fan, and theirs are very cheesy, and just tasted kinda greasy and icky. In keeping with the original Hill Country, the sides are small and overpriced.

Didn't care for the chicken either. I don't know, the crust seemed almost burnt.

Overall, not impressed. Spent $8.71 for a chicken breast and a pretty small side. Whole Foods' prepared fried chicken and mashed potatoes is much better, and you get an additional side for about $1 more.
