Celebrity chef Huge Acheson has made a huge splash with this big, urbane, exciting restaurant that pairs the chef's innovative take on southern food with a top-notch cocktail program. Great to hit late at night.

Excellent southern food in a modern, cozy setting. Inventive farm-to-table dishes will warm your soul. Make sure you try the apps.

Highbrow southern at it's finest; pork belly is great. Try the in-jars appetizer with a few cocktails and enjoy a game of bocce ball!

James Beard winner Hugh Acheson's Atlanta outpost is a Midtown favorite & its menu changes daily. I'm a fan of the superfood plate at lunch and you never know what will be on the dinner menu. The wine & cocktail program are killer & don't forget to leave room for dessert

TAKE A BITE OF THE BIG APPLE AT EMPIRE STATE SOUTH – Upon walking into Empire State South, its buzz and chicness grabs hold and one would think they were ready to dine somewhere in Manhattan

Exceptional experience! – After reading poor reviews online, I told our server that if the food was good I would write a review. First off, the restaurant is beautifully designed. More importantly, the wine list is extensive and very reasonable. We started off with the caviar which was amazeballs USA to the max. I had the flounder which was wonderful. Our service was great but not overbearing. I WILL be back!

Boring unexciting menu – Disappointing to say the least. Went there 3 times and have now decided that there's nothing there for me. Breakfast choices were dull, dinner even more boring. I resorted to the vegetarian dish just to see if anything was going to excite me. Bottom line, they are seriously in need of interesting specials 'cause if you're looking at the menu there just isn't much there to eat. Too bad. Once again, within walking distance for me but not going back. For what you pay it's just not worth it.

disappointing – Went the first time for breakfast excited by the rave reviews. I have now decided they must be mostly pure PR fakery so submitting my own. Coffee did not live up to menus enticing descriptions, grits were blah maybe even instant, and the eggs were actually raw with clear whites. No delicious artisan bacon, just eh and biscuits that I didn't finish and I love biscuits. Plus side, the view is great which is apparently what costs so much.

I waited and went back for dinner on a rainy slow Tuesday after giving them time to work out the kinks. it was worse . I walked in and wandered around a bit in the restaurant before finally flagging a waiter walking by to get a table. I won't say it was bad but at $50 a person without drinks my expectations are higher. Simply acceptable food. My soup was only mildly different from the Italian Wedding soup at OliveGarden. Artic char was heavy and the tastes stepped on each other but again really nothing wrong just not wow. I would have left it at that without a review but without going into details, it took three trips back inside the restaurant afterwards to get my car out of the parking deck. Three times including politely speaking with the manager the second time. It was the last bit that made me mad enough to finally write a review. Go to Bachanalia and enjoy a real resturant.

Citysearch Editorial Review – Athens’ culinary superstar Hugh Acheson’s first venture in Atlanta, Empire State South, is a high brow meat-n-two that does three meals a day for Midtown office hounds and gourmet-seeking foodies. Curiously lodged in the 999 Peachtree building, the modern-but-warm space is packed with a likeable mix of old money Southerners, and young, artistic gourmands. And the food is worthy of such a picky clientele. Jumbo peel-and-eat shrimp get delivered with cocktail sauce and homemade saltine crackers. Pork chops are bone-in and go perfectly with a mac-n-cheese that is fluffy-light and crumbly. An eye-of-the-round ribeye is the lone steak on the menu, and it comes topped with a pat of pimento cheese butter that oozes into every cut, immediately making you wonder why no one has put pimento cheese on a steak before. As for dessert, the homemade soft serve and classic coffee with cream is wonderfully appropriate.
