It was just ok – We went here because my bf was on Atkins and thought it was a great idea. There was tons of different meats but none of them were fantastic. I always love barbeque and this was just ok. The salad bar was REALLY sparse which was disappointing to me. Bottom line is, t's 60 bucks and I liked it about 7 dollars worth maybe ten if I'd had desert.
Nordstrom Quality Service, Five Star Food – One of my first jobs was working at Nordstrom, a place that is considered by most the expert on customer service. Laugh if you will, but even in the loss prevention department where I worked we were expected to be friendly and courteous, even while arresting someone. From my time there, I learned what it really means to give great customer service.
Which brings me to the topic of this review, namely the Brazilian steak house Fogo De Choa located in Scottsdale. For those who are unfamiliar with Brazilian steak houses, they are all you can eat restaurants, but with a twist. The twist is that, with the exception of the salad bar, the all you can eat is brought to you at your table via skewers for the most part.
Upon arriving at Fogo De Choa I was greeted by a smiling hostess who was well dressed and ready to help. As I am escorted to my table, my host asks if I’ve ever eaten here before. I tell him no and with another smile he explains the process to me. What at first appears to be a drink coaster on my table I find out is actually the magic signal. When the red side is up, I will be left alone. When the green side is up the gauchos chefs stop by to offer me whatever they have. I turn the coaster from red to green and now the fun begins.
Within moments I am greeted with a smile from the first guacho to pass my table. He offers me slices of the meat he carries, asking me how I like it cooked. If I don’t know what it is, he will explain. As soon as he’s gone, I have another guacho ready to take his place.
Very quickly my plate is full and I flip the card to red. The guachos no longer offer me more food, but my host returns to make sure everything is to my satisfaction and to see if I need anything else. While doing so, he also tops back off my water, which is all I’m drinking. This continues throughout the night.
Even at the end, as I’m paying for my meal they demonstrate how much they care about their customers. My host gives me one last smile and wishes me a good night. On my way out I am thanked by every guacho I pass and wished a good night as well, all done with their friendly smiles.
I have to say, even as spoiled as I am by Nordstrom, this was excellent customer service. From the moment I arrived until I left I felt that I was someone special. Now don’t get me wrong, the food is delicious, but to me what sets Fogo De Choa apart is their level of customer service. Over all, this is the best place I’ve had the pleasure of eating at.
Brazilian Steakhouse – I have visited the Fogo de Chao in Dallas many times and was excited when I learned that they had brought one to Scottsdale. Some might think that spending $30 for lunch is a bit exorbitant, but I believe you get what you pay for. At least, I used to think that way. I have dined at the Fogo de Chao in Scottsdale for my first, and probably last time.
The décor and ambiance is what you would expect from a five star steakhouse, first class. The team of waiters that serve you have it down to a science. You cannot even drop a bread crumb on the table without someone passing by and clearing it off of the table. The service has always been impeccable; it was the food that I found lacking.
I understand that all meats are not created equal and even the most discriminating establishments can get a bad cut of meat. I first sampled the top sirloin and thought to myself that it must have been a bad cut of meat. After the filet mignon, lamb, chicken and pork came by and each tasted as though they had been warming under heat lamps for days, I knew that the problem was not the meat. All the blame for this bad meal rests with the chef. The reason that $30 for lunch is worth it is because of the quality of meat and the flavor that they are able to infuse into the meat. Sadly, I was extremely disappointed.
I’m sure that one day I will go back and give them another chance. Had I not been for the multiple fantastic lunches in Dallas, I’m sure this would not be the case. Every day that passes I convince myself that it wasn’t as bad as it was. As soon as my memory fades enough, I’ll be back for at least one more try. Besides, it is too much fun to drop a bread crumb on the table and watch the headwaiter scramble to come clean it up. If you want fantastic service, you will not be disappointed. If you are looking for one of the best steakhouses in the United States, go to the one in Dallas.
