Chef Philippe Schmit's eponymous restaurant offers his "French Cowboy" take what French cuisine should be in Houston. Drunken foie gras is a must. Braised beef cheeks are solid. If you get a chance to taste his his coq au vin or a souffle, just do it and thank me later. Impeccable wine list by Sommelier Vanessa Trevino-Boyd. Desserts by Pastry Chef Jami King, like the tarte tatin, are always delicious.
Houston evokes many things, but Paris? Nestled in the Galleria area on Post Oak’s main strip is Philippe Restaurant + Lounge, a welcoming French restaurant adamantly doing its part to bring a little of France to this side of Houston.
Whether it's said with Continental flare or a New York accent Philippe’s is synonymous with delicious French fine dining fare. The very popular restaurant is a bright spot you can't help but turn toward for its delicious lunch and dinner specials.
If you're lucky, the gracious proprietor, Philippe Schmit may visit your table and toast to your meal with a signature cocktail or a wine from the restaurant’s extensive list. Bon Appetit!
Great Business Lunch and Happy Hour – Great 3-course business lunch for $18 and Happy Hour menu. I liked my cocktail with a real flower floating on top.
Great place, great drinks! – I came for drinks with some girlfriends and had an awesome time. The bartenders were very knowledgeable about the restaurant's fare, both food and drinks!
Happy hour prices were VERY reasonable considering the area (galleria). The decor is very 'french chic' with a texas twist, you have to see it to know what I mean.
A specialty cocktail you have to try is the 'blessing'. It is a pomegranite martini with fresh muddled strawberries--outstanding!
The bartender was enthusiastic about the dinner menu and I did see some of the food going out to other guests--it looked exquisite.
I can't wait to come back for a formal dinner!
Go for the scene, NOT the food! – I went last night with a group of women- we are all "foodies" who get together once a month to try the newest places that have good reviews. When we arrived, less people in my group came than the reservation was for, and they would not accomodate us, so we could only eat in the bar. We ordered a cheese plate which consisted of cheese that had been left out too long and what looked like toasted Wonderbread cut in triangles (like a little kid's PB&J sandwich). It was not even good enough for all of us to finish. The scene was impressive - great location, decor, and a beautiful crowd; many of which I suspect are more interested in being seen than enjoying a good meal. (NB: this is my first-ever review after years of dining out, which shows the level of my disappointment with the place...)
