Walk-in Caribbean cafe serves simple yet satisfying dishes. – Walk-in Caribbean cafe serves simple yet satisfying dishes from Bob Marley’s homeland and its surrounding islands. This basic but authentic Caribbean outpost just off South Street is a source for homemade Jamaican comfort food like jerk chicken, curry goat, oxtail and pepper steak (or step away from the staples and try the owner’s own mango shrimp) presented on paper platters with fried plantains, rice and beans, plain rice, salad, steamed cabbage or provisions, which is the owner’s name for boiled yams, dumplings or green bananas. Owners Patsy and Trevor Rainford cook up food from their native island and spice up their spare-looking space with a few small paintings of iconic Jamaican images and colorful wooden napkin holders depicting images of Caribbean landscapes and indigenous fruits. Expect to share the vibes with local Jamaicans and the typical range of South Street dwellers, from Midwestern tourists to tattooed punk rockers slipping in after an early show at the TLA.
