Texas BBQ at its Best – Rudy’s Country Store & BBQ (Rudy’s) off of 290 is a favorite for Houstonians and a great spot for any non-Texan who wants to experience Texas barbecue at its best. When you pull up to Rudy’s you’ll notice that there’s a gas station, but the restaurant is far from any type of food you would expect when making a pit stop for gas.

Rudy’s uses wood-fired pits fired. Any pre-conceived notion that barbecue is chicken and ribs slathered with thick sticky barbecue sauce cooked on a grill will be completely disrupted when you try Rudy’s Barbecue. The oak used to fire the pits infuses the meat with lots of flavor that is not overly smoky. Also, the barbecue sauce is not sticky. Instead, it’s the kind of sauce that drips off a spoon rather well, and it is served on the side.

Rudy’s is an establishment for serious meat-eaters. You will notice t-shits worn by staff say “I Didn’t Claw My Way to the Top of the Food Chain … To Eat Vegetables!”

Rudy’s brisket is flavorful and tender. Recommended is the brisket, moist ($5.89 + tax for a ½ lb). It is certainly moist, but not overly juicy. The brisket is delicious standing alone, but adding Rudy’s bbq sauce or as they call it “Bar-BQ Sause” adds a tangy element that boosts the flavor. They have different levels of heat: “Original” and “Sissy.” When you’re served your food it is weighed, and the meat is served on butcher paper in a crate along with slices of bread. Heavy calories and carbs for the sides and desserts, but if you're out to get some flavorful barbecue, this is the place to go.

Be prepared to get there before noon on a weekend. There’s a long line that stretches to the door once the lunch crowd hits.

Far but worth it – After starting a new job on the Northwest side of Houston, I was craving a decent barbecue that was not far from work. I was looking for a place that I could travel to on my lunch break to get some delicious sausage, brisket, ribs, or chicken without having to drive out towards San Antonio or Austin. I had tried Rudys after I went to San Marcos last summer and instantly fell in love with it. The smokey flavor, the ambiance of the place, the fact that it not only is a restaurant, but also a gas station/general store. Only in Texas I guess. Luckily they opened a location closer to home. Home being Houston of course. Also, I have to give it up for their desserts. One of my favorite things about these roadhouse establishments is that they have amazing desserts and while high in calories, you kinda justify it by saying that you are only there every once and a while, so you better enjoy it while you are there. I look forward to frequenting this place more in the coming weeks and I think that you should too!
