Best Restaurant Week Menu By Far – I went to Solas last night as part of Downtown Raleigh Restaurant Week. The only thing I am disappointed about is that we hit Solas so close to the beginning of the week. I'm sure that every other menu/location we try for the rest of RW is going to be a disappointment compared to this meal. When we arrived at Solas, we did not have a reservation and they were PACKED. The hostess was able to find us one table for two without much delay, and despite the fact that every table in the place was full- our dining experience seemed particularly private and relaxed. To start, I had the hot rock and my friend had the duck quesadilla- we had heard alot about both of these dishes and they exceeded all of our expectations. For dinner, she had the surf and turf (there was a small additional charge to add the lobster but the tail was huge and not all shell like you sometimes get). I enjoyed the PLT which was a great, original vegetarian option. I like to eat as healthy as possible but sometimes there are no healthy options that satisfy for having a nice dinner out. For dessert, we both had the peach cobbler and it was a perfect finishing course.
Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and payed close attention to the details without being interruptive or over-bearing (when my friend got up to go to the bathroom, she returned to a fresh napkin folded neatly to the side... and I hadn't even noticed the switch although I remained at the table the entire time). The drinks were almost too good, as I found I had tried about half of the drinks on their custom menu by the time we reached our entree course.
The only thing that I can honestly say bothered me about our experience was the dining room music. The decor is chic and modern with a wall of candles and sheer curtains between each table... but the music they play downstairs would only be fitting for a cheesy hotel lobby. It's not that I want to sing along through dinner, or get up and dance next to my table- but something a little more unique and engaging would be nice. The perfect music to fit this ambiance would be something like a Regina Spektor sound.
After dinner, we stopped into the rooftop for a glass of wine but were so full from dinner that we couldn't stay long. But I plan to return as soon as possabouible to enjoy the rooftop's ambiance.
Now that I have no reason to continue down the list of participating Restaurant Week venues.... I may just plan on dinner at Solas for the rest of the week.
Kudos to the Chef, Management, Service Staff, Bartenders, Hostess and all involved in the evolution of Solas. You have won me over.
Just so-so – My Fiancee and I went to Solas Sunday. She had purchased a deal on a website that offers discounts. Something to the effect of $35 for$75. At that price it is a value, otherwise steer clear. Ordered food was as follows. She crab soup:Great, Hot Rock(shrimp and steak on a hot stone) poor presentation and really needs some sort of sauce. Shrimp cooked in this manner is very dry and flavorless. Pineapple BBQ chicken: Amazing! Great flavor combonation ample portion. My Carolina Rainbow Trout the exact opposite flavor wise, cooked perfectly temp wise yet flavorless. It was covered with buttered crab meat. So that means extremely rich on top soft flavored fish below, very poor culinary pairing. Perhaps seasoning the fish with herbs, garlic...something would be better.
So if you prefer very simple uncomplicated food that tends to lack real thought, in a great atmosphere Solas is for you. Some minor tweaks to the existing entree selections could make this place great.
Great Dinner – I had the foie gras and filet off of the tasting menu, unbelievable. Felt like I was in a big city, between the plate presentation, and high level of service. The only problem was, there were several things I wanted to try. I will have to come back. Great assortment of wine selections by the glass as well. Sat on the pation on a beautiful night, I highly recommend it.
Beer Dinner – So, I decided to go to the Carolina Brewing Company beer dinner at Solas last night... Not much of a beer drinker really, but the menu looked good so I decided to try it.
A very good decision on my part. I'm lactose intolerant, so eating out is frequently an unnerving experiece. Each course of the dinner had appropriate (and delicious) substitutions :).
Although I'm sad that I didn't get to try the cheesecake (stupid lactose intolerance!) - that was; according to the other guests around me, expertly paired with the "Nut Brown Ale" the lactose free sorbet I was given was excellent. I'm not typically a huge sorbet fan either - but this sorbet was not too sweet and the flavors went well together... Mango and berry or pomegranate (my best guess).
I'll be back again soon, for sure!

fav dish filet or tempura lobster ! have dinner and then chill on roof great for date ! very busy at weekends.
Great atmosphere, good food – I brought a large group of co-workers to Solas and we were very happy with the experience. It seems like the kind of hip, contemporary place you would find in a bigger city.
Solas has three levels: the restaurant, the lounge, and the rooftop. We ate on the bottom (restaurant) level, which was the only level open during the night of our visit (a Sunday). The menu is diverse: Solas offers tapas AND large plates, and you can mix and match.
I had the hot rock (steak & shrimp) tapas/appetizer and the sea bass for my entrée. The hot rock was a great conversations starter with the heat and the smoke and the sizzling. Plus, I could make my steak and shrimp as rare or as well-done as I wanted. The sea bass was very moist and flavorful, with a change of pace coming from the pirogi-like artichoke ravioli.
The location is great because it is in the heart of Glenwood South. The building is new and was specifically built for Solas.
The wine selection was very good and the service was attentive. Solas is a good place for group dinners, and a romantic place for couples. I will definitely try Solas again, hopefully when it is really hopping.
Who can screw up a rum & Coke? – Solas can, that's who. A girlfriend and I went to Solas on a Friday night around 10 -- the crowd was decent, but not slamming. Certainly not big enough to be messing up drinks. My rum & Coke came with bottom shelf rum and a miniature splash of flat Coke. My friend's Stinger came only with cognac and a splash of lemon juice -- no creme de menthe. She sent it back, and the second came with so much creme de menthe it tasted like you were drinking a Wrigley's spearmint stick. Needless to say, we left before finishing our drinks...time during a girls' night is too precious to waste here. Go up the block to the Hybernion -- better drinks, better atmosphere, much better bartenders.
Not Bad for what it is. Late night Bar – Very pretty place. Lots of young people with no money. If you are looking for a place that is new and hip here it is. If you are looking for something that is appealing for 27 and up go to sullivans or one of the jazz clubs around glenwood
