Although the food was great, I had a terrible experience at this establishment tonight... The waitress was fun and attentive, but as we retreived our checks we have found out that the servers tips were added to another table that happened to be my mother in laws table of three peope. I had made reservations early in the day for a total of eight people, and later discovered that two people in our party had cancelled, so I immediately called the resturaunt to let them know that their was only seven people in our party. Well my mother in law decided to come an hour and a half later, only to sit at another table and not greeted with hushpuppies as they usually do. Well once we received our checks we saw that the waitress has added her tip, which wasn't an issue. Then my mother in law notice that she also had a tip charge of an amount that the waitress added to her table, and had decided to have tip taken off of her bill, to make a long story short... a manager approach the table with the ugliest attitude and stated that basically he didnt find that their a need to take the tip off her bill, so I then demanded that the tip be taken off, he did so, and then call the cops on me for a 9.00 tip. Isnt this something, to be banned from an establishment (SOBER) that has no sence of direction from their managers. I am so looking forward till tomorrow when I contact their GM, the BBB, and Human Relations. The sad part is that I was totally embarrassed that most of the people that sat down at iur table for my husbands 40th was public officials.

Not all it's cracked up to be – I thought this place was a delicious place to eat seafood, though it didn't really wow me like I was expecting from the other people that had gone. It seemed a little pricey for what it was. I'm not arguing that it wasn't delicious, but just a bit of a disappointment based on what people had told me previously. The more money you pay, the more delicious the meal is, I can vouch for that though. Very crowded usually but service is still about as expected.

extremely disappointed – So, I had heard good things about 42nd Street Oyster Bar from co-workers and the boyfriend and I went there for "date night" this past Saturday.

Things started out well...the hushpuppies were very good. As in "eat way too many of them" good. That will become important later.

We order the crab cake appetizer. And they mean it literally. It was one crab cake. Unbelievable. The crab cake itself was ok, but the cocktail sauce that came with it was awful. Just bland.

Our drinks came out about the same time and what can I say. My drink (rasberry lemon drop) tasted ok. But it didn't have hardly any liquor in it. The boyfriend's Key Lime Martini was completely tasteless. It didn't taste like vodka. It didn't taste like limes. It literally did not taste like anything. And again, very watered down.

We were feeling less than enthused by this point. The bf had been going on all week about getting the fried seafood platter...and he probably would have been happier if he had. Instead, we both ordered off of the evening's specials. They were not special. (I would definitely stick with the regular menu and things they know how to cook.)

Anyway, he had the grouper with shrimp and artichoke hearts. The shrimp was overcooked, but the flavor paired nicely with the artichoke. We both liked it. However, the grouper underneath was bland.

My entree was also hit or miss. I had shrimp and fennel ravioli topped with scallops and a very cheesy sauce. The scallops were also slightly overcooked, though not enough to be rubbery. And they did not pair well at all with the sauce. The ravioli, on the other hand, was pretty good and did go well with the sauce.

My meal ended with my side dish, which I have to rave over. I didn't want a salad, so I got the black eyed peas instead. They are cooked with country ham and salty salty. Like having your own personal salt lick. Which, unlike the vast majority of the population, is just how I like them. I loved them, but you have been warned. :-)

Anyway, we did not take a chance on dessert. And I ended up being glad about that when the hushpuppies did not want to settle. Seriously, they are really good, but don't overindulge. Stop yourself after 3 or 4.

Gotta say, the meal was overpriced for the overall quality of the food. Will not be going back when there are other, better restaurants downtown.

North Carolina's Best Oysters and Bands – You can't go wrong with anything you order at this place ( the crabcakes need a little work). You gotta try the Key Lime Pie! All the food is cooked to order and served by some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. If you have any questions about the seafood or anything on the menu, just ask ANYONE that works there. Also, Don't miss out on the best bands the area has to offer. I have been to this place many times and have NEVER been disappointed.

Can't get Enough – Although we don't get out as much as we used to due to 3 children at home, when we do it's off to 42nd St for Food, Beverage, and Fun. The service and food have always been great and the management team is always assisting staff which I think is awesome. You just don't see that as much these days in other places. There is never a cover charge to listen to the bands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Some of our favorite items are 42nd Street Oysters, buffalo shrimp, Shrimp Creole, Ahi Tuna, Crab Dip and steamed oysters. The last time we were in the oysters were from Pamlico sound and they were unbelievable. We love to sit at the oyster bar, as it is very laid back and a lot of fun. I can't wait to get a babysitter and get back. Yall rock 42nd Street!

My favorite restaurant in Raleigh – I LOVE the food here, especially the Seafood Fettuccine. Plus, they have an excellent selection of beer (over 100 different craft beers). The live bands can be hit or miss, but are usually pretty decent. I watched a State/Carolina game there last February and even they stopped playing to watch the last few minutes of the game

Always a good time – The calamari is always good and we enjoy the live bands on week ends. Sometimes the bar gets really packed but it is always fun and the crowd is a good one
