Stay Away from Mitchell Mechanical – These guys were a company referred to me by my father who is a general contractor. They used to do good work for him. I contracted them for a heat pump to be added to my gas furnace. They were a little high on the quote but I thought because they used my perferred brand, American Standard/Trane, it would be a better fit with my furnace.
The first guys didn't do a very good job of sealing the coil to the furance so there was a lot of hot air going into the garage. Then the following day nobody showed up even though I was at home and took the day off of work. The called and said their was confusion and they would be back the next week. The next week, a subcontractor showed up who was the only competent person I worked with on the project. He had to go get lots of parts they had forgot to bring and it took him all day but he did finally finish. That night the Heat Pump didn't seem to be putting out much heat and in the morning he confirmed the blade had fallen off the motor inside the heat pump. It didn't do much damage but it did damage some of the internal parts. He did put it back together and it is working fairly well.
I called and let them know there were two items outstanding. The leaky seal on the coil and the damage to the heat pump. I had to take another day off work to be home and they came out and slapped some furnace tap over the leaky coil, which fixed it sort of but not entirely. They documented the problem on the heat pump and assured me it would be fixed.
3 weeks later and I haven't even received a call back or a reply to my emails asking for a status. Once I paid the bill in full they won't answer or return phone calls or emails. On top of this I don't know where my warranty on parts and labor stands, I guess there isn't one since I can't get a hold of them.
I have now engaged a lawyer to try and figure this out. It really didn't have to be hard but Mitchell Mechanical decided to make it hard. A simple call letting me know it would take some time would have sufficed.
Nightmare, completely goofed up install of Unichiller ++ – We asked Mitchell Mechanical (MM) to install a Reverse Cycle Unichiller. Their attitude was great until we signed the contract. Long story short, $30,000 later, we documented & reported to them for 15 months that the Unichiller was flawed and the related piping that MM had done was wrong. They denied it for 15 months straight. Even when the heat pump failed every month this past winter and left our family with 2 little kids in 20 degree temps without heat in December '09. They just didn't know how to fix it so they said it was fine and didn't believe us. So there we were this past winter with NO HEAT in our brand new state-of-the-art, award-winning green house.
Finally we contacted the Manufacturer's Rep who confirmed that the unit was a LEMON AND the entire piping that MM had done was WRONG. He finally twisted MM's arm and got them to return to fix it. He had to lead them by the nose to show them ALL THE MISTAKES. They still argued. Finally 17 months later they have been forced to fix the obvious mistakes. The unit is still not working correctly and they won't release any of the information (heat loss calculations, balancing completion letter, owner's manual etc) that we paid for and own. So now we are forced to hire a new HVAC contractor to get this fixed with money out of pocket because they have to start from scratch with calcs and testing etc.
But wait, there's more!! We have since discovered that the Heat Recovery Ventilator and related ductwork that MM installed is all WRONG too. The 3 stooges would have done better. Yet, they deny it, they lie, they act arrogant and suddenly they've come up with a whole new reason for not coming back to fix the problems at the end of 20 months. NARCOTICS. Apparently we have drugs in the house (gee, why wouldn't you call the police?!!?) and so we're really scary. Gee, I didn't know my kids' Tylenol was a narcotic. These guys are incompetent AND pathetic. I'm taking this to the Attorney General's Office because crooks like Mitchell Mechanical should not be in business.
