Upscale goes sustainable at the eco-chic Bardessono. – Local and seasonal—the hackneyed concept of our restaurant generation—gets a lavish makeover in the heart of genteel Yountville. Organic vegetables and herbs grow on-site, stone fruits and figs travel less than a mile, and even proteins like lamb and duck are raised in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. An equally earthy ambiance blankets the indoor-outdoor space with reclaimed wood tables and muted greens and tans throughout. Plates are artfully crafted (albeit small) creations and service is decidedly choreographed. Menu highlights include hook & line Atlantic cod with fried parsley, Marin-grown sirloin with shallot-pepper marmalade, and seasonal sweets like rhubarb and buttermilk panna cotta.

It's easy being green at this Napa Valley resort in Y-ville. – One of the most highly anticipated hotel openings in Napa Valley in years, Yountville's first all-green resort opened in February 2009 to the delight of eco-conscious travelers everywhere. (Mother Nature also probably let out a sigh of relief.) Siutated on six acres which were originally part of a 20-acre lot bought in 1926 by John and Lucy Bardessono, the hotel features drought-tolerant foliage, organic herb gardens, vineyards and an architectural style--rusting steel, flat roofs, black window mullions, recycled woods--that pays homage to the region's agrarian history. Incredibly, Bardessono creates half of its electricity from a 200-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system mounted on top of the hotel's flat rooftop. The 62 guestrooms--decorated in subdued earth tones, naturally--have large glass panes for winter warmth and exterior venetian blinds to keep things cool in summer. Motion sensors turn off lights and electrical devices when the room is empty and turn them back on when guests return. Each room is decked out with LED, halogen and fluorescent lamps while water-conserving features include low-flow fixtures and dual-flush toilets. As for amenities, think Coyuchi organic linens and terrycloth robes and complimentary filtered still and sparkling water.
