Portland's Best Indian Buffet – Like another reviewer, I joined City Search just to review this restaurant. However, I only have good things to say about Mayura. Although the atmosphere isn't fancy, the food is exceptional and the service is very hospitable.

Having traveled India for 6 months and being a long-time lover of Indian food, I consider myself a bit of an Indian food connoisseur. This place doesn't disappoint! Since I live NW, I had been going to Swagat. I stumbled upon Mayura one day and have been so happy to have a go-to Indian buffet close by.

Most buffets cater to the masses and make their food bland. Not Mayura! They really kick it up a notch and make the food taste authentic. Unlike Swagat's stagnant buffet menu, Mayura really mixes it up from day to day. The dishes are always revolving and there's a huge selection of vegetarian options. Additionally, they always have pakoras and samosas on the buffet and sometimes chapati:) For drinks, there's soda, chai, and lassi - at no additional expense.

As for the owner, I have found him to be incredibly friendly and service-oriented. He knows I like diet coke, so brings it to the table before I even have a chance to ask for it. Before it's even finished, he has brought me another. He asks how we are, and has even gone outside to chase down my boyfriend just to say "thank you" for coming in. Hands down, the service is 100 times better than Swagat and the owner is far more hospitable.

I have never experienced a lack of food here - and I've been plenty of times at different times of the day. They do bring out smaller portions at times to keep them fresh, but they have never run out when I have been there.

The ambiance is nice (much better than Swagat) and bright, but not fancy. I have seen into the kitchen several time and it's very tidy and organized. The bathrooms are also clean.

Don't be deceived by the bad reviews. Check it out and decide for yourself. I don't think you'll regret it!

Really Good Food – Thought I'd even out the reviews by offering a dinner review. I've never been to the lunch buffet which is what other reviewers were covering but I've been to dinner here three times and each time was greeted with a smile. The food was delicious. I've never had dosa before and was astonished at the size, never thought my friend and I could begin to eat it all. We also loved the entrees and the peshwari naan which is a personal favorite.

I agree that the service is a little more lukewarm. The first 2 times I went, we found ourselves prairie dogging a bit to find a waiter when we needed one. This last time I went, they did a great job, came by frequently to fill water glasses and see if we needed anything.

So maybe they're learning.

NEVER GO HERE – I joined citysearch just to write this review. I am an avid food lover and cook, years of restaurant experience, good tipper and understanding customer. With that all said, it is rare I have hatred for a place, until now. I went to lunch there to give it a shot despite the already two bad reviews. I work at Good Sam, have an hour to eat and a buffet seems like a quick and efficient way to go. The buffet line was empty. on a friday. at lunch. for almost thirty minutes. No one came to the table to say it would be a wait or anything. They would bring out 5 pieces of naan at a time, which were promptly scavanged by the people closer waiting to eat. Awful. I got up and left.

Horrible food, Limited selection – If I could, I would purge the experience at this place from my memory and tattoo "Never go to Mayura" on my forearm!!

The food we were served had no salt or spices, the Naans were half cooked. The selection was limited.

This restaurant does serious damage to the reputation of Indian Cusine as being full of flavor, spice and variety.

Bearable food, Horrible service – This place and its owner amaze me!

They had another restaurant with a similar name (Mayuri - ww dot mayuri dot net) in Beaverton. When I moved to Portland about 5 years ago, that was the first Indian restaurant I went to. The food was semi-decent but the service was lousy and apathetic - you almost felt that you were being a burden on the owner, manager and waiter!

Service: The same dude opens a restaurant in the northwest district. I was hopeful that they might have learnt and improved their service - but no! As retarded as ever! I went there on a Saturday for their lunch buffet. I greeted the host/owner with a smile, but he found it inexplicably hard to even smile back! The water glasses were perennially empty - I had to get the water myself.

Food: The spread was tiny compared to any other Indian buffet in town. The tandoori chicken was cold and hard. It was good to see ground mutton keema in the buffet, but the high salt made it inedible! The chicken biryani was the saving grace. Hardly any veggie options - just a lousy, soft potato curry. Any of the items that got over were never replenished (except for the naan, which was replenished 2 at a time!). The dessert - gulab jamun - was made with a cheap mix and the sugar syrup was thick and crystalline!

Ambiance: The setting was good, The restaurant had 4 people for a saturday lunch - that gives you the picture. The music was some lousy world music/electronic and was in stark contrast to the setting. They can provide the people with some good Indian classical/light music.

I can't believe someone can be in the restaurant business with attitude like this. I hope the owner/host learns to smile and improves his service - but knowing how he has run Mayuri over the years, I would be surprised if he does!

Places like Mayuri and Mayura give Indian hospitality a bad bad name! Please save yourselves the pain and displeasure of visiting this horrible joint. At least, I am not going there again! I would much rather go to India Tandoor Kitchen (the service is slow, but pleasant) or East India Company (the latter is a little expensive) in downtown.
