I will NOT be back – I ate at the newly opened one in Roxboro. My party of two was seated right away, but we then waited 9 minutes before a server even acknowledged our presence and asked if someone had taken our drink order. When our server came, she took only one person's drink order (unsweetened tea) before turning around to help someone at another table. When I redirected her, she took my drink order. Considering how long we had to wait before she came, we decided to go ahead and order our food. Both meals came with a choice of two vegetables--but only TWO were listed on the menu! When we asked about it, she said they ran out of most of the vegetables on opening day--Labor Day! Here we were four days later, and Yamato still did not have onions and zucchini?! She told us that the other vegetables would arrive the next week or so. How did Yamato know to leave onions and zucchini OFF the menu to start with? They must've known they had only a day's supply.....Within 3 minutes the server came back to tell us that there was no unsweetened tea because "someone forgot to make it." In the meantime, a party of two came and was seated right beside us. After waiting for 7 minutes, they asked, "Are we supposed to go [to the register] and place our order, or is someone coming?" We told them about our experience. After waiting 10 additional minutes, the couple left, walking RIGHT PAST their server who was standing at the register oblivious that her customers had just walked out. Our entrees arrived fairly quickly, but went to another table before arriving at ours. The party on the other side of us looked over and said, "Not a good impression at all, hunh?" HECK NO!!
The steak and shrimp was just okay--nothing japanese about it. My fried rice looked like it was prepared hurriedly and mixed with white rice. They must have been running out of the two vegetables they DID have. The food was definitely not worth the experience. I won't be back and Yamato won't be in Roxboro for long at this rate.
Customer service needs improvement – I went to Yamato for lunch and ordered sushi. It was quite discolored from what it should be so I sent it back. I am no expert, but I have eaten a lot of raw fish and that is not what it looks like. It was only about $4 and the waitress said she'd take care of it but when she talked to her superior, the supervisor would not remove the charge. I can understand that it is a business and the food was made already; a polite explanation/appology would have sufficed but she argued with me. I just didn't like the whole way she talked to me and I believe customer service is a very important part of having a nice lunch at a restaurant. I was also there to see the Teppanyaki presentation and it was a presentation that I could have done. no tricks, no conversation, no entertainment.
Go to Kurama's instead – We've been to Yamato's twice. First, the food is extremely salty and they put way too much soy sauce in the dishes. Second, part of the reason you go to a hibachi place is to see the neat stuff the chefs do. The Yamato chefs don't do anything really fun and the food is mediocre, at best. I would much rather spend my money at Kurama's (which is only ten minutes away.)
