He's the Best Around- No Question About It! – I went into Mr. Faulkner's Driving School as a teen driver that didn't have confidence on the road. Practicing with my parents was becoming so stressful that I just wanted to give up. I felt like all my friends were driving, and I was the only one that couldn't do it. This is when I confided in Mr. Faulker, and he worked with me to make me into a VERY strong driver. Not only does he teach you how to master correct driving technique, but Mr. Faulkner stresses safety and showed me how to make the safest decisions on the road- all the time. I am now a GREAT, safe driver, and I know that I wouldn't have been able to do it without such a wonderful mentor. Thanks to Mr. Faulker, I have all of the tools that I need.

Should have done it sooner – I have spent the past few months sitting in the passenger seat with my 3 teens which wasn't easy. Although they were doing well my husband and I felt they needed an objective and experienced teacher. I saw the article in the Observer about Mr. Faulkner and I knew it was meant to be. I quickly called him and after meeting him I knew my kids were in great hands. Of course at first my kids thought it was a stupid idea. After driving with Mr. Faulkner my kids have thanked me and told me what a great experience it was. He was patient and taught them things that I wouldn't have thought of. Now I can feel a sense of relief that I now have three confident drivers on the road!

He's been the king of the road for 33 years

Driving instructor loves teaching teens to be safe

By Joanne Spataro:The Charlotte Observer

Paul Faulkner makes hard lessons easy for new drivers at his Faulkner's Driving School in Matthews.

If you're ready to jump into the driver's seat, Paul Faulkner will show you the rules of the road.

Faulkner's Driving School in Matthews has attracted teen and adult students looking for a flexible schedule and personal touch for 33 years. "I don't want to be the biggest driving school, just the best," says Faulkner. The 64-year-old challenges students to take personal responsibility at the wheel for a lifetime of safe driving. Faulkner's philosophy focuses on safety and being constantly alert.

"When I'm teaching kids, it's called information overload," he said. "This means students must react quickly to road conditions, so they don't have time to get nervous." Through Faulkner's customized lesson plan, students learn how to get on and off the interstate, make basic left and right turns and U-turns and get in the habit of checking their mirrors and blind spot from the start. They also learn to fearlessly navigate busy streets like Independence Boulevard. Faulkner makes hard lessons easy for teens. "It's like when a mother gives a kid medicine; you put it in orange juice," he said. He said he has students make decisions about approaching intersections, turning and stopping. He also notes road signs and potential hazards as part of his six-point check plan. "They think they could never hit a car," he says, but when they almost do, Faulkner turns the incident into a "Kodak Moment." When students realize a mistake can mean an accident or death, "that light goes on" in a student's head, he says, and then, as an instructor, "You have nothing to worry about."

Students love Faulkner's real-life stories and humor. They also enjoy the flexibility of taking his class on the weekends, since they may have after-school activities during the week. High school sophomore Bobbie Jones, a sophomore, when asked to describe Faulkner in one word, says he is "helpful." Freshman Cody Leviner said he appreciates Faulkner's cautionary road tales.

Faulkner is a grand presence at his classroom podium. "I don't debate, I don't argue," he says. "They're there to learn. "I love teaching teenagers. ... I've been dealing with them all my life."

Faulkner, who lives in the Lake Wylie area, has been a teacher for 41 years and has taught teens since 1990. He ran the driver's education program at Sun Valley High School for 18 years, retiring in 2000. Faulkner opened his business in 1978 by first teaching adults, including students with special needs.

In 1979, he taught 21-year-old Gene Helms - who was deaf and had cerebral palsy - how to drive, through shoulder taps and pointing. Faulkner offers 30 hours of classes and six hours of driving for $300. Those looking to improve their driving can take six hours for $230. His most popular package is 13 driving hours for $400, with two hours free.

In fact, most of his business comes from word-of-mouth: His "secret weapon" is moms who tell other moms. When Faulkner's off the road, he's with his wife, Dolores; three children, Reggie, 43, Chante, 41, and Franklin, 32, who teaches alongside his dad; and five grandchildren.Faulkner said he gets a kick from riding his motorcycle and has been an avid photographer for 20 years."They say that if you find something you enjoy doing, you never work," he said. "I haven't worked a day in my life."

THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER - Parents take note.. – This summer I made the choice to enroll my daughter in private driving school to prepare for her permit and later her license. After much research and multiple recommendations, I chose Faulkner Driving School. My daughter was able to join a class that was M-F for 30 hours that week and this covered ALL of her classroom requirements for driver

I recently signed up for driving lessons with Faulkner Driving School. Mr. Faulkner appears as a nice person and seems to know what he is talking about; HOWEVER, his business practices are very unethical. I paid $230 for six driving lessons because Mr. Faulkner said the initial consultation would be free. I signed up for this promotional package. Mr. Faulkner DOES NOT use written business practices on his prices and refunds. DO NOT GIVE THIS BUSINESS ANY MONEY WITHOUT A FULL WRITTEN EXPLANATION ON WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY BE RECEIVING. Mr. Faulkner cancelled my first 2 driving lessons because he claimed his family was sick. He then proceeded to basically dodge my calls for the next 2 1/2 months. I decided to cancel after not receiving any driving lessons for 3 months. Initially, Mr. Faulkner said he understood and he would send out my FULL refund immediately. After 3 weeks I called Mr. Faulkner to ask about my refund and he was very rude and claimed that the BBB gives him 30 days. After 30 days I called Mr. Faulkner and was sent straight to voicemail. By the end of the week I went to his office and spoke to his "son." His son was also very rude and could not give me a full explanation on why I did not receive my refund and when I could expect it. I had to go to the Matthews Police Dept. and have an officer there call Mr. Faulkner directly. Mr. Faulkner spoke to the officer and agreed to give me a refund in 3 days. Mr. Faulkner only partially refunded me and gave several different contradictory statements on why he was keep part of my money. I had to file a claim with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). To date, I still have not received the rest of my refund.

My advice to anyone considering this Driving School is BUYER BEWARE. Faulkner Driving School has over 7 claims in the last 3 years for unethical business practices with the BBB. There are limited options for driving schools in the Matthews/Mint Hill area and Faulkner Driving School takes advantage of this. Mr. Faulkner and his staff are very unprofessional and rude. The customer service offered by this business is very poor. MY CURRENT BBB CLAIM IS UNRESOLVED AND I HAVE TO FILE WITH THE SMALL CLAIMS COURT TO RECEIVE MY FULL REFUND.
