From Uptown to, well, South End, the trolley is Charlotte's preferred method of transportation. – The Tour
Two bucks will take you from Atherton Mill to ... about a half-mile from Atherton Mill, and right back again. But your conductor will gladly point out items of interest along the way; it's a perspective on Dilworth and the South End you won't get from your car seat.
Once one of a fleet of dozens of trolleys, this was the last streetcar to operate in Charlotte in 1938, after which it served as a National Guard office, a concession stand, and finally as rental housing until it was declared unfit for human habitation in 1987. Aside from the trolley, there's also a museum, which is open to the public. The antiquated building holds some trolley cars in the process of being renovated, as well as historical displays on the role of the streetcar in Charlotte's history, photos of trolleys around the world and a gift shop.
