Keep driving past this place! – I bought a groupon for lunch, thinking I’d take a shot on a place we’d never been to before… unfortunately, we were both very sorry I had that idea.

So we get there and walk in. It was big, but mostly empty… which isn’t a good sign to me at 1:00pm on Saturday afternoon. There were 2 large fish tanks, but they seemed to have a lot of algae growing inside along with the big rocks and few fish. The place had the ambiance of a “front” for more lucrative illegal activities; we even discussed that topic as we looked around. The glass walls were visibly dirty and needed to be washed, the brass railings were dull and grimy in their appearance, you could tell that the fixtures hadn’t been touched (much less cleaned) in quite some time. There seemed to be various smaller rooms with nobody in them. There also seemed to be far too many employees on staff for a restaurant with so few patrons. Nothing about the ambiance was welcoming or friendly.

They sat us at a table and a waiter approached us. He walked to our table, put down the obligatory (also useless) bowls of hot mustard and pink duck sauce… no fried noodles to munch on? Disappointment. After setting them down, he continues to stand there at our table, but he didn’t speak… it felt uncomfortable, so I broke the silence and told him we both wanted sweet tea to drink. He nodded and walked away. So far- awkward would be the best way to describe our experience. He comes back with our drinks and takes our order. I ordered Chicken with Cashew nuts, fried rice and a spring roll. My husband ordered Sesame Chicken, fried rice and an egg roll. We both take drinks of our sweet tea and grimace as we swallow it… it’s thick, syrupy sweet tea that somehow tastes like cold coffee! Clearly they brew their tea using their coffee makers (an old restaurant practice) as the tea tasted like coffee and left an unpleasant aftertaste. We told the waiter we didn’t like the tea and would both like to switch to Coke. The cokes were a drastic improvement, but didn’t speak well for the food that was yet to come.

When the food arrived, it looked fine. The portion sizes seemed correct and the fried rice was tasty with egg, peas and pork pieces in it. I’m sad to say that the rice was the best part of both plates ? My chicken and cashews was just ok; too many mushrooms, tiny cashews and small pieces of chicken. My spring roll was larger than I expected, but it tasted greasy and sour… not sure what caused the sourness inside a spring roll, so I didn’t eat any more of it. My husband ordered what he thought to be a safe selection; sesame chicken. I tasted his and it was hard and tough. It tasted very much like the brown sauce they poured over the chicken was burnt. The sauce tasted burnt and the chicken seemed like it had been microwaved. His eggroll was large, but it also tasted very microwaved, hard and thick outside that was hard to manage in your mouth. Yuck! I was immediately saddened that his lunch was basically inedible. I asked him if he wanted something else, and he said no- that he was afraid they’d do something to his food if he sent it back, since we’d already complained about the sweet tea. So basically, he ended up with fried rice and coke for lunch. I was not at all happy about paying for a meal that he didn’t get to eat, and that we’d leave a restaurant with him still hungry!

We never got a refill on our coke, but it ceased to matter as we’d already been given our bill. My groupn was good for $16, our bill was $18.29, so I left exactly $2.29 along with our groupon and we got up and left. A couple came in as we were leaving and I felt the desire to warn them, but decided that it wasn’t my place to do so in person, but I could hardly wait to get home to write this review so I can maybe help others before they waste their money at the Great Wall of China South.

Excels. Consistent Quality – My husband and I have been eating here for over twenty years. Every time we go, we are satisfied with the quality of food and friendliness of the staff. Special Trio always has tender meat and crisp broccoli. A little spicy, but not too much. Have tried similar dishes at other restaurants and they are barely edible in comparison. A Charlotte institution which must be tried by all.

Wonderful Food - Highly Recommend it – We celebrated two of our anniversaries here. The Four Happiness is very good - lots of fresh veggies in their food. The service is very personal. They serve your first helping of food to you from a big platter and then put the platter on the table for you to enjoy after you eat your first helping. Prices are higher than I normally would pay, but it's worth it, because the food is much better.

LOVE THIS PLACE – I have been eating here for years. I was actually 3 when they opened! Every sunday, my parents would take us to eat. During the week, it's the place we would beg to go.

Since I was a child, this is the place I have gone every year for my birthday. It's my tradition. Even though I live an hour away now, I still go. I love that they will make my food however I want it. Plus, their tea? Oh My God. Wonderful.

I now take my children there. It's a family thing.

Great food, nice atmosphere at a goo price – I have eaten here numerous times and have always been pleased. The decor is nice though fairly conservative and the food is great.

The SaCha Scallops I would highly recommend.

You can easily get out with $10-12 lunch including tip.

Best Chinese in Charlotte – I have been eating at the Great Wall of China South since it opened up its doors back in the eighties. I have tried many Chinese restaurants in and around the Charlotte area, and I still enjoy their food the best of all. They have been very busy updating their restaurant this year so the atmosphere is even better. This restaurant is great for family dining or a date. Lunch and the Sunday buffet is the best time to go for those on a budget. Their shrimp and broccoli (spicy) is great!

Could be a lot better. – When I went there the food was decent, but nothing fantastic. The carpet was really dirty and the atmosphere was pretty 80's-vegas. Service was unenthusiastic at best, although they did get a 2nd round of drinks. I would say you could do a lot better going somewhere else.

BEST KUNG PAO IN CHARLOTTE – Since moving from DC 2 years ago, this is the best by far-The ownership has got it going down there.

Stay away from the Kitten Surprise and the Ruff Ruff Puppy.

Great experience. Classy atmosphere. – This is a great place to eat. A little above average on the price but a great value. The food is excellent and the environment is nice, with two very large fish tanks with many tropical exotic fish and coral. Food is hot and people are friendly. Good for well-behaved children but could be a nice date restaurant as well.
