Jack Allen may look big and commercial, but the menu is quaint and local: Every day brings new Texan-tinged specials, and the choices are inspired. Butternut squash hash and Gulf crab-filled queso are two recent examples.

Too bad... – Sounds like Jack's staff needs an attitude adjustment. Seriously.

My first & likely ONLY visit was a few weeks ago. A close friend had a birthday happy hour planned there and I wanted to see her. I was on a tight schedule and making the drive out to Oakhill for the occasion at rush hour was a feat for me as I had to be back in Central Austin by 6pm. Honestly, had the place not looked so appealing on their website which I googled to find the location (and the nice marketing touch of a free appetizer for joining their email list was alluring) I would have waited to see my friend somewhere closer.

I was equally impressed with the first visual of the establishment. It looked warm and inviting inside. I greeted the hostess, a young, blonde woman (hair bulled up & back ~ to reveal the apparent chip on her shoulder ~ quite made up) who gave me the impression she was judging my laid back appearance pretty heavily when I smiled (a common practice of mine) and asked if she knew where Kate's birthday group was? She said she did not. Meanwhile a gentleman in a dress shirt joined her and they both watched, seeming amused as I looked for my friend. I looked to the left of the hostess stand, in the outdoorsy patio, I looked all around the bar & cocktail tables and into the almost hidden room to the right and then approached the hostess (reluctantly) again. I asked if it was possible she was straight through the back in what appeared to be more seating, but maybe not in use. She said she didn't think they were there and that she knew of no 'birthday' group. So I walked outside and called my friend's husband to learn she was, in fact, inside the very business I was at. When I re-entered, I walked right past the hostess stand to ask a bartender when I see my friend & group in the booth DIRECTLY BEHIND the hostess stand with plenty of pretty birthday packages on the table. I was so put off by the graceless efforts of Jack Allen's hostess and the fact that I had to then sit right behind her (maybe I do have issues, but please...aren't we all struggling a little? Shouldn't we just be kind...) , that I enjoyed little else of my experience there. The waitress serving us helped make it bearable. the quesadillas were pretty awesome. But it made me sad to imagine this small business owner & chef pouring his heart & time into such a potentially fantastic business while some young woman & friends potentially sabotage it for him. Life is too short, folks. Maybe this will reach the right person and the right customer service training will follow...

Jack Allen's : F A I L !! – This is the second time I have tried Jack Allen's, and it will be the last. On our first visit, our server was so rude and abrupt I wanted to walk out! I literally had my plate tossed infront of me ( it bounced!). Maybe she was having a personal crisis? Her poor behaviour continued through our meal and became the topic of conversation for the evening! I'm always willing to try a place a second time, hoping to have a different experience, so off we went for my husband's birthday this evening. It was an hour before they closed the kitchen, but it was just the two of us for a quick dinner, and unfortunately we were treated like the staff couldn't get us out of there fast enough. My order was messed up, I was questioned about my allergy to nuts (c'mon, really?!) and our indifferent and irritable server delivered my new salad with a heavy sigh and a mumbled apology. Once he figured we might complain, he gave us a $5 off coupon as we left. TOO LATE!

Hey, I'm from Austin- this is friendly, laid back city, and I have expectations from those who work in the service industry here. I have always received stellar service in dumpy dive bars to the most highly regarded eateries in town, so that raises the bar as far as customer service goes. Mr.Jack should be embarrassed.

Oh, and the food was OK.

GREAT PLACE! – Jack Allen's Kitchen is fantastic! I have been going there since the day they opened. Finally a great place to eat in Oak Hill. One of the best if not THE BEST in all of Austin. Prices are very fair, service is great, and I was really impressed when Jack took the time to come out of the kitchen to introduce himself and ask how we were enjoying our meal. My wife and I try to eat there at least once a week.

My new favorite spot! – My favorite is the chicken nachitos appetizer. You must get it, it is wonderful. The homemade pimento cheese is wonderful too. I really love this place, can you tell? The lobby area is very cozy with leather seats so you can rest comfortably and have drinks and an appetizer while you wait on your table. We've never had to wait very long but we usually eat early.

I would avoid the Sunday brunch as it was just so-so but definately try Jack Allen's, you won't be disappointed.

Gristle and bone in chicken tacos – I was really dissappointed the other day. My chicken tacos had gristle and bone in them and were way too spicy. Everything is way too spicy. On the Sunday Brunch the kitchen service was horrible. We were supposed to get biscuits and pancakes as appetizers and they didn't get there until we were finished eating. They have laid off all of the good servers. I just don't get it. I won't spend my money there. I won'f go back and I will tell my friends to stay away.

horrible service – My husband and I heard great things about Jack Allen's and decided to go there for a date. It was busy but most good places are. We put our name in and got a buzzer and settled in by the bar to wait...and wait...and wait...and wait. After 50 minutes we checked our name and we were 3rd to go--we couldn't wait--mainly because I was sharing a couch with a woman who was toasted and kept sitting on my lap. 20 minutes later I went to the front to see if we were next and the girls there couldn't find our name. They had found it before but not then. Apparently no one wrote down our buzzer number and so they just moved along.

Hey, mistakes happen but what was most annoying is the empty look from the hostess when I was trying to figure out the problem. It was like "sorry we messed up, too bad for you". There was no offer to seat us immediately, no offer to buy us a drink, just a big blank look. When the manager finally showed up, she was trying to seat us but not very hard. "You'll just have to wait for the next table". By then, I wasn't hungry and just wanted to leave.

We spent $17 for 2 diet cokes and a bunch of aggravation. I would take this as a definite miss.
