Canter's has, what seems like, an endless menu. This is a typical Jewish delicatessen, with pastries, bagels, soup, matzo brei, deli meats...and you can get it all 24/7.
Their pastrami on rye is legit. And their chicken noodle soup is exactly what you need on cold days. Also, the bar attached is a fun little place to go for a drink.
Classic LA Jewish deli. Sandwiches are solid, bakery is brimming with rugala, black and white cookies, and petite cupcakes. Fun late night.
This is where you go late night for Matzoh Ball Soup, retired waitresses, and quite possibly among the greatest people watching spots in all of LA! If you stroll in after 1am, you're sure to be entertained.
Great place for a Jewish deli – I've been driving out to canter's for many years from Riverside. I've always loved it. I once thought the prices for the sandwiches were a bit high but then I realized that for the size and taste it was priced right. The cream cheese cake is the best anywhere! I love going late at night. It reminds me of when I used to go after a good punk concert back in the 1980s. This place is like home to me.
The decor is the best eames-era anywhere in LA. The history of the place is interesting and the staff are great. There are times we've met celebrities and wonderful people there.
We always hit the bakery on the way out and talk to the people at the counter. I pick up some salmon at the deli counter too.
I just wish they were closer to home.
Still Great – Surprised to see some negative reviews. We've never had a bad experience at Canter's. And we've been going there for 10 years now and continue to do so every time we're in L.A.
Staff has ALWAYS been friendly, service is prompt, prices are comparable to other delis. The bakery is to die for.
And P. S. - They thank you on your way out.
Not even close to being a decent deli – If anyone thinks that Canter's is a good deli, go back to the McDonalds that you came from.
I've been going to Canter's on & off for over 50 years. What was once a pretty decent deli has evolved into an overpriced, deteriorating quality wannabe. The food is not good. There's no other way to put it. And it's too bad. If you want to complain, they'll laugh at you. The manager's act like they're doing you a favor by just seating you. A once good spot is now a "Beware" place.
Canters – The food is unbelieveably bland, the atmosphere is great if you're looking for smarmy.
I AGREE WITH THE NEGATIVES – WELL FOR SUCH A FAMOUS PLACE, THEY DONT SEEM TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT MAINTAINING THIER FAME.
NICE OLD SCHOOL RESTAURANT LAYOUT, FOOD QUALITY FOR THE PRICE? GO TO NORMS.
MY FRIEND HAD A HAM SANDWICH THAT LOOKED LIKE IT CAME OUT OF THE PLASTIC PACKAGE AT 711,
AND I HAD A $12.00 CHEFS SALAD, THAT WAS NOTHING LESS THAN PATHETIC, IVE HAD BETTER SALADS AT MCDONALDS(NO JOKE).
LOTS OF EMPLOYEES, NONE SEEMED TOO CONCERNED ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THIER TIPS.
TOO BAD THAT SUCH A FAMOUS PLACE CANT LIVE UP TO ITS FAME.
COULD BE GOOD IF ANYBODY GAVE A DAM, BUT IT WAS APPARENT THAT NOBODY DOES.
JUST MILKING THE FAME FOR ALL ITS WORTH,
If you go to Canter's for a Ham Sandwich or a Chef Salad, you're in the wrong place. Every restaurant has items it's famous for and does well. THOSE are the items you should try. I recommend you try the Matzo ball soup or the corned beef sandwich or even knishes. I recommend the rugalach. They're excellent, especially the raspberry ones. If I was looking for a chef salad, I'd probably go to McD's before Canter's. But I'm not going to find great corned beef or pastries at McD's.
Canter's Hits the Spot – I was just here again recently with me buds I haven't seen in a long while. For a late night spot, it's a good pick. Sure, the food isn't all that great. But, I always have had good service here and stepping into the place is like stepping into a time machine. Sometimes, I'll come here just to sit and have coffee myself. They never try to rush me out which is good!
Canters – Classic place to eat in LA! They have the best Deli sandwiches and they are open 24hours! Great place to go when you're craving a bomb deli sandwich!!!
its your average diner, but their menu selection is huge, theres a ton of stuff to choose from, and the staff is friendly, they have great pickles too, i believe they make it themselves there. over all it was great, the price was decent and it was open til the late hours of the night
This is the best deli in America. – Canter's sandwiches cannot be beaten. Period. And the pickles, which are brought out to you on a huge plate at the start of your meal, are to die for. I recommend buying a jar to take out with you. Don't forget the black and white cookie, either.
I love Canter's--the ultimate L.A. experience – I love, love, love Canter's and consider it a highlight to visit. Always have, always will. Food's great, reasonably priced, and a visit is a Los Angeles experience, full of color and mood. Never had anything bad here, ever.
