Ok food, not an ok price.. – I have really appreciated the boom in burrito joints that has been happening over the last few years. It has made relatively healthy, quick, and tasty food available beyond the sub shops. I have had Chiloso a few times now, and think I have a decent basis for my opinions of the place.

First, they are pretty busy every time I visit, so that always bodes well for a restaurant. The turnover of food seems to be pretty high, so things tend to be hot and fresh. Now, at most burrito/bowl/taco joints you will get charged less if you get a bowl rather than a burrito since the restaurant is paying out less for your food. Not the case here. Ok fine. If I am paying the same amount, I expect to be getting the same amount of food in that bowl. They lean very heavy on the beans and rice and skimp on the meat. Today I had the steak, since it was brought out fresh as I was standing there, but I have had the chicken as well. The steak was cooked well, but was chewy and lacked any real seasoning. It basically took on the flavor of the beans, which were not bad. In my experience, the chicken is not a great choice. It is usually overcooked, and I have had plenty of bites of pure fat or gristle.

On to the toppings. I understand that things like guacamole and sour cream cost the restaurant more, and understand the upcharge. My issue comes in when you charge me extra, and then skimp on the extra or water it down (as is the case with their sour cream). When I get a bowl, I really would like more than a couple of slivers of lettuce, but that may just be me.

Ultimately, I would rather make the drive out to Freebirds than eat here again. The staff tend to be more pleasant, the food is better, and they skimp on nothing. For me, Chiloso could lower their prices, and pay a little more attention to what is going out to the line and they could really be a contender. For my money though, I would rather spend less, and get more somewhere else.
