Editorial Review for The Presidentials – by Citysearch Staff
Overview
The Appalachian Trail links nine towering peaks on the 15-mile Presidential Range, including imposing 6,288-foot Mount Washington, New England's highest point. With seven of the peaks above 5,000 feet and the entire route exposed above timberline, it's understandable why this is strictly for the very fit and able. And even well-seasoned and well-conditioned hikers can run into big trouble if they don't use good sense.
The Experience
But the rewards for a well-prepared hiker are remarkable: virtually nonstop views (weather permitting) and the satisfaction of conquering the most challenging hiking trail in New England. For those seeking something less daunting, there are numerous access trails available for loop hikes. Notable are trails from the north, leaving from Route 2 for Mount Madison and Mount Adams. You'll need detailed guidance; pick up the Appalachian Mountain Club White Mountain Guide at an area shop.
