I would not recommend going here for dinner. I had the most terrible experience ever! First time for my husband, daughter and I. To start this off there was no host/hostess to sit us. So since all the booths were taken at the moment. We sat at a table for 6 ( it was only 3 of us). It took the waiter 10 mins to even acknowledge us. When the waiter Julie came she had a little attitude. My daughter and I ordered ginger ales and it taste like seltzer water. Let Julie know she took them back to the bar and had the bartender taste it from either my or my daughters cup. As if I was gonna take it back if the bartender thought differently.
Now it really gets interesting.....We ordered fried calamari to start and Julie had the African American bus boy bring it out to us. Guess what the calamari taste like rubber we sent it back with her. Next here comes our O SO GREASY pizza with the same African American bus boy. Then my husband ordered another ice tea ( i was told no free refills) with Julie. Julie got the ice tea and gave it to another waiter to bring to my husband and she watched her.
Through all this My family and I are African American. I noticed that Julie serviced her other tables who were Not African American with a smile. Julie brought their food to their tables and checked on them. My family she did not.I was ready to go we barely touched the pizza. Now I'm FURIOUS!!!!! But Julie manage to bring us our check for $39.55 with a smile. When I asked Julie for a copy of my receipt she had another waiter name Gina hand me my change and copy of the receipt. When I got my receipt because of course I'm gonna have a talk with the manager about how my family and I was treated. I needed her name ( your waiters name is always on the receipt) Julie placed our order under another waiters name Gina. I was not surprised.
Before I left I had a talk with Sarah the manager who seemed Sympathetic about the situation. Took my receipt and said she would handle the bill. Then told us have a good weekend. Sarah didn't handle my bill. Sarah told us have a good night, come on Tuesday cause the pizza pies are $5 and it gets busy.
Last but not least I was furious and very upset that I had to deal with this racism in a SUPPOSEDLY FAMILY RESTAURANT atmosphere. I WOULD LOVE TO SPEAK WITH THE OWNER CAUSE THIS WAS A EXPERIENCE I HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO MY 7 YEAR OLD. I've never been treated like this at any Restaurant!!! And yes my husband and I go to 4 to 5 star class restaurants. We went out on the limb with this one. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Terrible Service and Absurd Rules. – I went to Star Tavern last nite 12/10/11 around 7:30pm my wife and I with the expectation of enjoying a good meal and much wanted r&r. But when we arrived we waited on there little rickety chairs and was seated in an awkward place near the bar with patrons rears in our faces. Then to make matters worse when we asked to be reseated the young gum popping hostess told us we could not change our seating. And gave some lame inconsiderate answer of no changes of seats to a booth. I explained we had not been served any food or drinking this may be her reason for denying us a different place to sit and enjoy ourselves but no she refused to have an open mind on courtesy. So, I politely went back to my seat only to be further humiliated. By the manager (SARAH0 what a b---h. Telling my at her best prison guard voice of sit there and like it. Even though I was not talking to her and was just explaining to our young polite waiter what the problem was and how stupid there unwritten policy is to deny a patron the opportunity to change there seating. This just totally destroyed our nite and made the food lose its taste. After this encounter and rude addressing we plan never to come back to this place even though we have been there on many other occasions. But after dealing with Nurse Ratchet from the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, SARAH) AND HER INCOMPETENT GUM POPPING HOSTESS our food tasted bad. oN TOP OF THIS the (Everything Pizza)) was badly burned on the crust and we could not finish the meal. No apology, or attempt to move us to a more comfortable place. How would you like to have someone treat you like a 5 year old and jump into your conversation. They are a rude bunch. THEY ALL SHOULD TAKE A CLASS IN HUMAN AND CUSTOMER COURTESY. Manager- SARAH couldn't manage one of my stores and oh yes I am a business man in West Orange we sell jewelry. STAR TAVERN YOU CAN KEEP IT. AND I WOULD LOVE TO MEET THE OWNER AND TELL HIM HOW HIS STORE IS BEING RUN IN HIS ABSENCE. OR DOES HE KNOW AND DON'T CARE. PRIDE COMES BEFORE THE FALL!!!
Best Pie (and wings) in New Jersey – Thin, crisp, fresh and flavorful. Great taste! My Thai wife refused to eat pizza until we went to the Star. Now we make an hour long drive each weekend for an eggplant pie and the greatest wings around. The food is addictive.
