Having practiced Tae Kwon Do for years in another city, I was referred to Darimar because of the pedigree of their masters, and the impressive dojang (training hall). The Grandmaster and the masters under him are all Korean and execute the art with much skill. Everyone there is very nice.

Where this school falls short is that they do not teach anything beyond basic conditioning and a few base kicks. A typical lesson is 50 minutes where 20 students aged 6-60 participate together. 90% of the class is under 10 years old. They take you through a light cardio workout followed by 20 minutes of executing basic kicks (front, side, back, and maybe tornado kicks) on paddle targets. Then the class breaks up where the higher ranked students teach the lower ranked students the requirement for the next belt. The class usually ends with a game of tag . This is it; every lesson.

What is really different about this school than others I have attended is that the grandmaster and his instructors really don't TEACH anything. A new student is thrown into the mix and left to the mercy of the other students to help them figure things out. They also don't show any practical application of the art; it's all about conditioning and kicking targets. They do not offer adult classes, even though they have one listed on the schedule. As a new student, I was heavily encouraged to come to the family class and hurriedly sent on my way once it was done, because the grandmaster uses this time to have his masters help him with his own workout.

Bottom line: This is a decent place for an absolute beginner of any age to learn some basics and get into shape. However, it is not a practical martial arts course. For the money, a better value would be to join the YMCA and take conditioning courses there.
